Hello all,

Had my 2004 CV8 mot'd the other day after taking 18 months off, whilst trying to get the surface rust off the discs on the way to the centre I managed to fade them! I mean come on, seriously, I know they're bad brakes but that takes the biscuit

I'm fully aware I don't own a Corvette but since swopping manufacturer wheels on Grand Turismo on the Playstation, I'm a bit of a sucker for anything OEM from other stuff, I found some C6 calipers for an absolute steal, fully refurbished, that are the same as the 2005 CV8, not APs or VXRs but a marginal improvement I'm guessing.

Long story short, I only have Corvette or 2004 CV8 brackets, does anyone have any 2005 brackets kicking about? That will allow me to go to the bigger discs.

From what I know I need some bolt shims to keep it safe, and my hose is longer on a 2004 so that should fit fine, just need 320mm discs and if anyone has a pad recommendation? I was going to go for the DP41162R Yellow Stuffs

I'm not expecting big things but I'm on a bit of a budget and I have a stripped Suzuki Swift Sport for track duties so it will never have to work too hard

Thanks

Have you tried contacting Brett speed4u or Gary raving ? they break Monaros and might be able to help you out.
Search for them on piston heads.

I changed mine last year to the later VXR front discs, and the pads are the same as the CV8, I went for red as I had yellow and they were very dusty and the red seems not so, I left the rears as standard because the discs are bigger on the later ones but there is around 1/3 of the disc face not used and the same pads so no real difference, I left the CV8 smaller discs because they look better as no rust rim left to look at later. I didn't need the shims for the bolts Mine is a 04 CV8 and the discs and calipers are from a 05 VXR 6,0

As any one come up with a pad size that will clean that last 1/3 of the disc, as I have same problem and it looks crap.

No mate they are all the same I researched it and even emailed race brakes in Sydney nobody does them the problem is that the caliper is the same as the CV8 just larger discs to fill the wheels out as they are 19" and not 18" that is why I left the CV8 set up on mine. The fronts are the same pads as the CV8 too just that the discs have a cone on them so they are bigger in diameter but same pad surface the rears can't do that because of the handbrake drum and shoes

I had the same problem on my VXR prior to AP kit, its does look ste!
If you really hate the problem then you could either fit 2004 CV8 discs and swap the caliper bracket to an 04 one so the caliper moves inward again. Technically due to leverage, this will reduce performance however in reality I bet its not noticeable.
OR get new rear discs, prepare and paint them, fit and use. The pads will almost immediately remove the paint from the swept area, but leave the rest protected against rust which looks loads better than rust. I did this on my 1st Ro, however I will add that after one short run I removed the wheels and pads again to clean any 'paint swarf' away.

the difference between 04 and 05 cv8 discs is minimal I wouldnt bother wasting the time on discs and pads.

youll get better stopping power with a better pad and look at braided hoses and maybe an upgrade of fluid too

1st thing to figure out is what faded.. because the discs overheated.,the fluid or the pads

if you want better stopping power go big . I fitted 350mm discs and aston db9 4 pot calipers to mine ,now that made a difference.
I fitted grovved rears too

The AP are good but not cheap , as above if you want to keep cost down , look at better pads and fluid , pads from pedders uk and can be ordered one line , if that no good then brake upgrade route ie AP set up

The APs are difficult to find and very expensive to buy and maintain. What I did cost a fraction of that and cheap to maintain.
discs 250 a pair
pads 50 a set
calipers 500 a pair
custom bracket 100 -150 the pair.

sounds a lot. but much cheaper than any other set

That sounds great and indeed much cheaper than the AP kit, however its only half the car and uses 2nd hand parts.

The AP kit is actually excellent value when you consider what you get.
4 New massive calipers - 6/4pot.
4 New massive discs - 362/343mm!!
Pads
All new fixtures, fittings, instructions, a warranty and no hassle!
The knowledge this kit was actually a factory option for the Monaro HSV GTO/GTS - manufacturer proved compatibility.

As for getting hold on them...easy. I rang AAS, they ordered them. It cost around £2300.
As for replacement discs and pads...on the shelf at Pedders.
And some people use Range Rover front discs as MUCH cheaper future replacements.

Certainly not knocking your efforts or kit though, brilliant to have options, but I cannot stress enough to anyone looking to improve their Monaros brakes, the AP kit is thoroughly awesome in performance and value.

I know the AP will outperform my set up. But for normal and fast road driving I think the 4 pot rears are overkill. Another plus for me was I already had the calipers from my last car .
Nothing wrong with 2nd hand calipers. Every car ive ever bought is 2nd hand so every bit is 2nd hand
I got the brackets made up for 100 quid. Pads were 40 .discs 250 and hoses 50
Was too cheap not to put them on.

Also there are kits that use Cadillac CTS 4 pots too. .

Original answer still applies. No point going 04 to 05. Maybe worth going vxr is cost is low

I'm running the 350mm DBA rear kit and very happy with it.

Just a reminder that you can get most things to fit with a bit of determination. 380mm R35 GT-R discs and calipers:
