I am having an issue with my car. She runs for literally a second or two then dies. It has been suggested that it's the VATS system. Has anyone else had this issue and is it easy to resolve or bypass?

I did find this, but as it does turn on, as I said on the other thread, its perhaps more fuel pressure related.

I would think because the car actually starts and runs for a moment, that the problem is else where.

I see that you have drained the old fuel, but wondered how many times have you tried to start it. The old fuel will still be present in the lines and engine, this will naturally need to be pushed through before the fresh stuff arrives.

It seems a fairly common issue in Oz. Fuel pressure is fine, I have a gauge on the FPR.

My key is dead, I assume it stops sending the VATS the correct signal/resistance and that is what is causing the issue.

Does anyone know of a way to refurbish the GM keys?

Sorry if you've already done the standard searches.
The system can be bypassed apparently. Might be the way forward.

I wonder if any of the Corvette services in the UK might be able to help. They'll surely have had far more experience with this system.

Possibly worth a look...

Although how sure are you that its the key itself? I've been reading it can often be the contacts in the barrel that touch or don't touch the key properly.

Thanks I will take a look. I am just guessing it is the key as it is dead, could be a number of things unfortunately.

Have you checked fuel pressure ? If it fires then cuts out,and is fuel injection, and has been stored for a long time, this all points to a fuel pressure issue.

Do you hear the pump prime ?? If no, perhaps the pump or relay, is stuck,or you do have immobiliser issues.
If yes,measure fuel pressure.

Sprat easy start into the air filter, while someone cranks it, if it runs for longer, you have no fuel supply.

I am 99% sure I have fuel. The surge tank was emptied yesterday and is now full meaning the intank pump is ok. The surge tank has a Bosch 034 which is under the car and I can hear. There is an FPR attached to the surge tank with a gauge. I will prime and get under there and check the pressure.

The key fobs are expensive and then have to be programmed. You can buy replacement rubber buttons for not very much.
Or attempt this - it is the FAQs

Wow, that looks a ball ache! Is there any source for new keys now since Holden are no more?

Yes, this is no problem.
I bought 2 brand new genuine fobs from Oz. Then I swapped over the key blades - dead easy. Found a lady in Rotherham that spent a couple of hours figuring out how to program them to my Monaro. She has since done a couple more on the back of my visit (I took my Astra some time after - that key done in 5 minutes), she remembered the pain!

For example...

I'd do my best to ensure they are genuine. I also tried the cheap copy case only options and replacement buttons. Sounds weird but they just didn't work right - too sensitive or not enough. The genuine ones I ended up with feel and work as I expect new ones should. There is no more thinking about it if you get me.

Blimey, you don't mess about! That link was just an example, not necessarily the best deal! There are other sellers available. I assume you needed the 3 button fob?
I must admit, you had me confused regarding the VATS thing, this key arrangement isn't that system. Thankfully its a better system.
One of my keys was dead, the other hanging on in there. Regarding the programming, that doesn't matter. But she will need the car because she pulls the code from the ECU and then programs the new keys to that code. Some people have a security code card that has the information on it. Makes it easier. I didn't, but like I said, she pulls the code from the ECU and also gives you the details on the receipt - easier for future.
Some people have also managed to get the code direct from Holden support, some have tried and failed. You might have a better chance with this because yours is a Holden rather than a Vauxhall as it were! If you could get the code, then any old key programmer should be able to help you. When I enquired, most couldn't be arsed to try without it. This lady had the 'I like a challenge attitude' and said she wouldn't be beaten! Charged only £72.

I am bored to distraction even though working from home, so I am on a mission!

Thanks again, the whole thing just got easier as Carl can reprogramme keys so will do it for me when the car is at his.
