IT looks like we got off relatively lightly with the budget this year, well as far as fuel duty and road tax are concerned.
However, I did read a new proposal to amend the road tax system for 2017 high emission vehicles like the Mustang and possibly the last few VXR8's?
Some genius in the government is talking about charging £2k every year to road tax vehicles in this groupyikes
I was going to make a rather flippant remark and say that idea sounds like a real class one vote winner, the trouble is of course these days with all these Eco warriors everywhere it probably is a vote winner !!!!

No changes to VED have ever been retrospective. The 'penalty' for cars over £40k list and the flat rate of £140 for every car only applies to those registered after March 1st 2017.

any changes would be from a specific date onwards, I would expect?! frown

For older cars for example, bands L and M only apply to cars registered after March 2006.

When I first bought my car in 2007 I paid the standard rate road tax at the time.
The Government then retrospectively increased the tax from March 06 onwards. Some Monaros get cheaper tax and some don't.
It was all done to save the planet apparently!!!!
Anyway I think the Government is Hell bent on getting people into electric cars asap. I doubt there will be much if any resistance from joe public other than the from classic car boys.

It would depend when in 2007 your VED expired. The actual exact date was 23rd March 2006 because the budget that year was presented on 22nd March 2006. The increase in prices of bands L and M was from the next day onwards. There didn't seem to be that many leaks those days, except the 'deliberate' ones because I don't remember anyone seeing it coming!

Consequently, if you had bought a new car in late 2006 or 2007, it would have come with the VED included (as new cars do) but the renewal when it ran out would have been pricey. frown

In those days, VED transferred between owners too so any tax on a used car first registered after 23/03/06 would have transferred to the new owner.

Bands L and M were actually created earlier I grant you, but they were charged at the same rate as band L. BUT, from the day after the budget, bands L and M got more expensive for NEW cars only and have rocketed up since.

Full details here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_Excise_Duty

Edited to add: It was in 2007 - 2009 that bands L and M got truly jacked up. 12 months VED went from £215 to £300 and then £400 in just 2 years! Only if registered after 23/03/06 that is.

Reading it back, I probably could have set it out more clearly.

It's now a huge cliff that 'cutoff' date. For new cars, the WLTP measure replacing NEDC for emissions is a whole different ball game. I think we all knew the 'real world' emissions weren't as good as when tested but for most cars, the bands they are in will jump up.

But the Monaro is Euro 4 so can be used in London without paying the ULEZ! Fuel consumption in the teens does not equal high NOx emissions, apparently. smile

I'm lucky I guess - my VT2 GTS-Rs are only 265.00!

Registered before 2001? Or perhaps a grey import? If no emission data is available, you pay the VED rate as a LGV.

This also applied to low volume manufacturers with no emission data provision required. So any TVR registered from March 2001 onwards is only £260 p.a.

ETA: Having looked it up, I see the GTS-R wasn't meant as a road going car in Australia, but a VXR version was made for the UK. Nice one. smile

If it’s an import the build report is very important , i have two fsti an pre 06 and post , the newer car no emissions figures and it’s cheaper by a fair amount than the older car and also cheaper by even more than a similar uk vehicle , but on the twist trying to get some common sense from the dvla can be hard work , my maloo has what it is all in one line as far as the model it is , it’s not kept simple as registered as a holden then hsv maloo , called the dvla and got no further

Yes both registered 2000 & 2001. Was a GTS 300 in Aus though.
