Hi there.

Just wondering if anyone had any joy reconditioning an alternator on a facelift version of the cv8 ( later model )

Had a mechanic come to the house to have a look but he reckoned the alternator was kicking out a good bit of power. Ordered the new battery ( yausa 150amp )

Fitted it but has just died after a half hour journey. Got the car home safe n sound though under its own steam because I never took my eyes off the battery gauge lol.

Don’t know if anyone has had a similar problem after being told by a rated mechanic that the alternator is fine. Maybe another issue?? Am pretty sure it’s the alternator though and need a new mechanic to have a look. Cheers

i bought one as the particular parts on the one fitted to the car were not available in the uk , rock auto via fedex they will quote a landed price with taxes paid , probably your best route , i may have a spare that is working that was reconditioned, as i ended up with a couple of alternators in the end , it was reconditioned by a place in borehamwood hertfordshire , as the issue was another part which was available , where are you based ? , check the connections first to the alternator and alternator to the battery , i don’t know if your alternator is the same as mine as it’s an o4 cv8 so older ? shape , the place that reconditions is called unit exchange in borehamwood they will accept items by post , if parts are available it would be 80£ to 100 £ or so

30 minutes running should not kill a battery, unless you've all the lights/wipers etc on.

But it should be a pretty easy test to see if it is charging. Just measure running voltage at the battery is usually a basic indication.

Although it should be pretty easy for any local alternator repair shop to fix ( or test ) yours.

Thanks for the info thumbup

I’m based in Scotland just outside Glasgow. I’d be happy to buy and I’d assume that if they are both 3rd gen ls1 engines it should fit.
I really should get it checked again though as I’ve been through all this alternator nonsense with vans in the past and I’m positive that’s the problem. I’m just about to get this thing wrapped aswell and every time I get close something goes wrong lol.

Just done the clutch, wortec exhaust with headers. Ap’s All round ( so 19’s that need a bit of love with new tyres to fit over the brakes) suspension. Diff and now an alternator. And a Vxr interior. Should be like brand new by the time I get it wrapped. rofl

Honestly couldn’t of been much more than 30mins. No heater and it’s real cold here at the moment. Only side lights on the way home and maybe a couple of skooshes to clear the windscreen. Hamilton to Motherwell and back 15 mile round trip and the battery gauge needle was all the way down to 8. Tried to start it when I got it parked and zero. Brand spanking new battery aswell.

A brand new battery may not be fully charged.

Simple test, is check voltage at the battery when running.

Or if you've any sort of code reader type OBD tool....just keep an eye on voltage whilst driving. Although it may display a little lower than voltage measured at the battery, purely from volt drop on wiring. But you'll still see the difference between engine not running, and running where it should be charging.

Don’t have the tools or time myself But will pass on all the info you guys have gave me to the mechanic. Much appreciated. hopefully I can enjoy it this summer and make some meets if all goes to plan.

That’s some good service. They wouldn’t happen to be based in south Lanarkshire would they scratchchin lol. I did speak to one company from through here that repairs and recons them but after we got by the “ not a movano it’s a monaro “ bit. They said they would phone me back in 5 but never did. Some places aren’t interested if they haven’t heard of the model before.
