Hi guys.
Can anyone recommend which FM to use in my standard diff? Looking to chuck some in to help reduce the odd clunk.
I've seen this stuff...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GM-88900330-Limited-Sli...

Cheers.

When I had my standard diff I used Royal Purple with a separate friction modifiers bought from Monkfish.
With the Truetrac diff I again used Royal Purple diff oil and no friction modifier
With the Wavetrac I use Castrol diff oil and again no modifier.
I seem to recall Redline modifier was well regarded for standard diffs and maybe a modifier from Motul which is a good oil company.
If I remember correctly change the diff oil, then add a tiny amount of modiifier as required, basically do not add too much modifier or the diff will not lock up.
Get the diff nice and warm then do a few slow tight turns both left and right. If you can feel the diff sticking add a bit more modifier.
Once you're happy with it you could try a burn out and make sure you are putting down two black lines on the road.
Remember the diff is temperature sensitive and may not work properly if the oil is cold. It's a bit of a fart on but In not aware of a better method.
I can dig out the oil spec if required.

That is why I asked what oil was in the diff as RP isn't brilliant and the castrol is far better if he has RP in then as suggested remove it and replace with Castrol syntrax that should quieten it down some don't add a modifier with it but I added some redline and mine is now as quiet as a nun and locks when it should

I'm using Morris Lubricants LODEXOL XFS 80w140 which isn't suppose to need any additional FM.
My diff is generally clunk free, but I'd like to try some additional FM to hopefully stop it completely.
I'm not too interested in the diff properly locking up etc. I drive it like a nun anyway. Would prefer smooth quiet operation.

Interestingly, when I took my car for some work at AAS, they checked my diff oil and I was told they topped up with the RP stuff as they had drained some to have a look. He suggested it might be a 50/50 mix now. It was after this I noticed the clunking and I have read myself some don't rate the RP oil in the diff.
I will pull some of my 'mix' out and replace with the left over Morris stuff I've got and I'll throw in a bottle of Redline FM.
I can't justify a full replacement, the Morris stuff is expensive enough and the mix I've got has no miles on it.
Money pits!!laugh

Put a few thousand miles on the diff then drain and refill with Castrol, think of it as flushing it out.
I only use Royal Purple in the engine and gearbox, and have done for years without any issues. However for some reason I'm not too keen on their diff oil.
The Redline FM is well regarded so you shouldn't have any problems with that mix.
Anyway get your hand in your pocket and buy a Wavetrac. Mind you I did survive on stale bread and beans for six months to pay for it yikes

Schaffers and Redline are generally regarded as the best gear oils available. Ask their suggestions (Dave on the tech desk at redline is a wizard)

Not saying you do, its just my diff clunked a bit and the friction modifiers quietened it down, but then it didn't lock up properly, and was horribly unpredictable.
Upon removing the diff centre the cone was cracked.
A cone type Diff should'nt really clunk, and if it does, randomly, its more than likely not functioning properly.
In fact id call the stock diff a limited Grip diff.

Even though my car is an old turd, I cant be dealing with diffs that don't lock properly. Id rather live with a welded diff or a spool. I went with a kaaz 2way, second car i've put one in, and they are very good. I got it from aus and paid a local gearbox place to fit it in the case.
