Hi folks, recently entered the world of V8 with a VXR8 auto on an 08 plate.
Love the car, but have noticed that when accelerating in 1st or 2nd there is an occasional vibration towards the rear. This doesn't happen when in higher gears, and only when putting your foot down a little more than normal, but I'm certainly not flooring it when it happens.
Any ideas of what I need to be looking at?

Difficult to diagnose in this way and a danger of being way off the mark!
Maybe prop-shaft/centre bearing related or even gearbox mount. All roughly in the same place if the car was to be inspected from underneath. Could even be the diff, some might say a good fluid service is in order.
Get to a garage, let the pros have a look!

It's in the garage tomorrow, just wondered if anyone had experience of anything similar, to give me a starting point. Appreciate the reply

Ah right, less than an hour from AAS in Newcastle. These guys have loads of experience with the Monaro and VXR8.
Bare them in mind smile

Will do, had planned to see them about headers and cats, but want mechanical issues sorted first 👍

OK cool.
Just know they are far more than just an exhaust shop. They've done full rebuilds on engines, gearboxes, diffs, suspension, everything! They even get involved with project cars, do lots of custom work on extremely expense motors!
Very competent guys.

Always difficult to diagnose, but just start with the easy stuff first. It could be anything from a simple tyre problem, a bent wheel, a propshaft balance problem, a gearbox mount or engine mount issue.
As has been mentioned AAS in Newcastle is the only place I would trust to sort out any issues with these cars. Ask for Stuart and see if he can book you in.

Driveshafts?

This is a common problem on some of the Hondas and its nearly always the driveshafts/CV joints causing a vibration when accelerating.

Out of interest where have you taken your car to? I’m interested as I am in the NE too.

I'd go with centre prop support bearing - I've been there and it starts with being a small vibration and goes on to be a massive jackhammer on your back seat! Have a look halfway up the underside of the car, the rubber on the support will be shredded.

AAS rebuilt the diff in my Monaro last year and did a great job.
If you do need a rebuild you may have a couple of options, a standard rebuild, just replace the bearings and seals, or maybe an LSD, and or crown wheel and pinion depending on what is wrong with it.
I'm not familiar with VXR8's, but maybe a diff ratio change and a Wavetrack LSD would be a consideration.

Looks like the issue maybe the diff.
A shocker is also screwed.
Not exactly what I wanted to hear, 3wks after buying it from James at Elite and having to replace 4 tyres with a week.
No warranty when you bought it?

Tyres would have been legal at POS it’s your issue there, not James’ you could have walked around and negotiate a reduction

The other two issues will be covered under SOGA and warranty, give James a call.

As for wavetrak the standard diffs great but gm purposefully used the wrong oil to stop the slip diff working as it clunked and if owners don’t know how a diff works they raised warranty claims

If it’s a Ro, and it’s on original diff oil, get some royal purple in it

So it appears that the issue is the prop centre bearing, with about 1" play in it.

Having been in touch with James, this along with the crank pulley issue, isn't covered under the warranty so will fall on me to replace/repair.

Can anyone give me info on where to get such a replacement and a rough idea on cost?

There isn't an AC Delco one in stock, but this would do it, $77, use the FedEx delivery option where you pay the duty in advance. Could see if a crank pulley is cheaper too, but it quite possibly won't be with duty...

Just to add, obviously removal from / re-installation to the car is easy, but I think getting the driveshaft bits apart is possibly a bit of a ballache scratchchin
