Hi guys, I hope anyone who remembers me is well?

The value of certain cars (like my HSV GTS-R VT2) seem to have gone through the roof in OZ.

example: https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/holdenspecialvehi...

Has anyone investigated exporting a car to OZ and if so how much does it costs & what are the pitfalls??

Doesn't it have to have been registered to an Australian for 6 months before it can be sold? Or something along those lines? scratchchin

I think exporting for yourself...when moving abroad would be a lot easier than exporting to actually sell ?

I'd presume there could be lots of taxes to pay if selling ?

You will have to make sure it is super clean, and you will be hit with GST on the value of the car. Then there are port and handling charges, and cleaning if it is required to be done.

Because it will have an Australian build plate, it makes it easier. (Pretty sure they still retained those on the exports), but you have to make sure that you get a permit to bring it in. I would allow $1.5k to be on the safe side.

What difference does the standard GTS car have, like advertised above, to make that LS1 produce 300kw/402bhp??
The 5.7VXR that we got here only produced ~375/380bhp.

It has the C4B Callaway engine, different heads, cam and rod bolts, couple of other minor engine parts. Trick diff, better brakes, lairy interior. That's it in a nutshell. They were very limited in there numbers hence the values.

I still think they’re worth at least double the price now in Aus than here.

Hi just joined the group hence the late response to this thread.

Here is info you want on importing cars to Australia

https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/imports...

Short version need to prove you own the car for 12months or more and it’s been available to use (kept close by and MOT up to date)

It will cost you about £3000 in shipping and could take up to 60days to arrive.

If your thinking of selling at the other end factor a few things into the profit line
- cost to clean and degas the a/c before shipping for UK
- cost for Aus compliance to get on the road - we are strict on windscreens, window tint can’t be too dark
- Vauxhall badged car will probably sell for less the equivalent Holden
- general corrosion in the engine bay needs attention to attract a good buyer, so you probably need to replace all visible corroded bolt on bits.

I’ve looked into this personally as I plan on bringing one back with me to keep (i’m Ozzie)

OK - I can probably give even more clarity here. As I have a fair bit of actual experience in vehicle import / export.

Firstly, there are a number of Australian delivered HSV and Holdens in the UK. These can be 'repatriated' quite easily.

IF ANYONE HAS SUCH A CAR LET ME KNOW AS I WILL LIKELY BUY IT.

I have done this previously with an HSV VX GTS and an HSV VE S1 Senator. I missed a VE S2 black senator, and Ryan Walkinshaws red HSV VE2 GTS.

As for your Vauxhalls.....these can only be exported to Australia using one 'rule' - which states that you (the applicant) must have had the car registered in your name for a period of at least 12 continuous months prior to submitting your application. You must demonstrate registration, insurance, where the vehicle was garaged, etc...as well as the fact that you must also show you are permanently leaving the UK, and permanently moving to Australia. You won't get approval unless you have citizenship or a Visa allowing residency.

As per previous poster, you'll likely need to evacuate the air con gas (depending on what type it currently uses).

RORO direct from a port like Southampton to somewhere like Melbourne can be as quick as 40 days....as slow as 60.

You'll need to pay shipping charges...and some eye-wateringly offensive port handling fees.

You might have an Aus Quarantine inspection called on your car, and need to get it transported to a registered steam clean facility. There goes a few hundred more.

You'll have to pay 5% duty on the deemed value of the car.
You'll have to pay 10% GST on the total value of the car, including on the duty component. Yes, a tax on a tax.
You might have to pay luxury car tax if this total rolled up cost exceeds about 35K GBP (about 63K AUD from memory) - this is about 33% - so yes, a tax on a tax on a tax.

You then need to get it engineered (not the same as Federal compliance...as a personal import it must meet the standards set by the state you intend to register it in). Likely $1000 - $2500.

You then need to have it proven to be roadworthy - even the certificate costs between AUD 80 to 250 - before the repair work.

Finally, to register it, you'll be up for some pretty heinous stamp duty - up to 5% in some states. So yes....a tax on a tax on a tax on a tax. Funny huh!

So a vehicle you bought locally for 30K GBP (54k AUD) that you THINK is worth $85K because someone advertises it at that rate....well, you should presume it will be valued at about $50K on arrival. Then add about $6K AUD for shipping and handling end to end, so that's about $56K. Close to $3k in duty. Almost $6K in GST. So that is now $65K. In this case you'd be spared the Luxury car tax. Then engineering certification and re-gassing the air con etc - maybe $4K to get it ready to register. So $69K. Then to register it, maybe another $4000 or so.

So you're at $73K.

And the car you think is worth $85K actually SELLS for $75K at best.

But as yours is a Vauxhall import, and we have a thing about rusty UK cars, it is worth 20% less. So it is worth $60K.

So you have lost $13K in the process.

...wasn't really worth it. Plus the bureaucracy...the risk....the time....the stress.

Far, far better to bring over a 996 Porsche turbo.

Hey mate, I assume your in Oz from the time you’ve posted. Have you imported a personal car from the UK -> Aus or only cars to be on-sold? I’m guessing on sold as you wanted to buy a few cars.

I plan on bringing back a Monaro so I’m budgeting and extra AUD$15k to cover shipping, duty, gst, cleaning etc ec

I may know someone selling a HSV VX GTS with 100k on the clock (yes Klm, not miles.)

Hi there. I have helped others import vehicles using PIS legislation but I don't really bother any more. Cars are not my core business activity, so I just don't have the time. Many reputable agents in Oz will do this circa $1000 AUD.

$15K should be an OK amount to budget for...unless it is likely to attract a particularly high dutiable value. If not, and you can claim it is worth around the $25K AUD mark...then $15K AUD budget is fine.

Ok thanks mate, much appreciated. Any companies you’d reccomend?
