VXR8 Aircon wont switch on
Discussion
To be honest I've no idea how smart the system is on the VXR8, but I know some cars have low pressure switches so the air con will not activate at all if no/low gas in the system. This stops the compressor and air con fan activating when there is nothing to work with. I'd be very surprised if your car didn't have a similar setup.
When the system is working properly, if you activate air con, you can hear the electric clutch on the front of the compressor click in and out.
Obviously check the fuse by all means, but it might be your car has simply never had a re-gas since new and it is now ready.
My 2005 Astra needed a re-gas last summer, totally dead, might have been its first since new. Its been spot on since, its not uncommon for them to very slowly loose gas over a period of years.

I see what the OP is saying though. That even when pressed, the system still says ac off. In all the cars I've known to have ac that don't work due to low gas, their display units will still shown that its on!
This is what I mean about not knowing how smart the VXR8 system is?
OP - it might be possible that the ac control unit is having a moody moment. And that it is ignoring you when you press the button. Many bits of electronic equipment do this occasionally - think phone/laptop etc..
I'd be tempted to disconnect the battery for a few minutes, it may reset something. Worth a try?
