At 40,000 miles I would definitely change the diff oil, if it's anything like a Monaro diff I'm surprised it's not clunking, either way it's past its best.
I'm not sure about the grade of oil for your diff, but I've settled on a Castrol Synthetic 75/140 grade and it's absolutely fine, but you might still need a friction modifier if you have a standard diff.
I have used Royal Purple in the past but I'm not too sure about that brand for a differential application, however I have continued to use Royal Purple for the engine and gearbox without issue.

the vxr8 needs to be changed at 60000k at the latest. Stewart at AAS Newcastle did mine last year when I was down at a meet. Mine was overdue but diff and g/box fine. Not cheap but use their Purple oil. Different viscosity for g/box and diff.Hope this helps.

Standard T56 Gearbox = Dex 3
Standard differential - Castrol Bot 720 aka Castrol SAF carbon Mod Plus

Don't use anything else and don't use any friction modifier

I think it’s a 6060 box rather than a t56 i don’t know if that makes a fluid difference at all ? diff will be the same as far as i am aware

Castrol BOT720 for the diff as stated above. You need about 1.5l so will have to get 2 bottles.

Land Rover use this in some specific diffs so I got mine cheap from them. Changed mine at about 20k miles when the diff was no longer locking up properly, but it didnt fix the issue.

I changed mine for the first time 4 years ago when my diff made the odd clunk with TC light when reversing near full lock. It solved the issue and I've since replace mine every 2 years.

Is Castrol Bot 720 aka Castrol SAF carbon Mod Plus recommended for a Monaro diff as well (standard diff)?

Monaro diff is very different , there is a castrol fluid that i put in mine that made it a lot better and quieter

the post is under
Which Diff
my reply to it was as per below

I’m assuming you have tried changing the diff fluid , castrol syntax lsd 75/140 totally stopped the clunk in mine and quietened down the whole drive train , monaro diff clunk is very common but easy enough to solve for about 30 to 35£ or so plus it’s an easy job to do

Thanks for the advice much appreciated, as its a job I am about to carry out and I wanted to make sure I got the right stuff. I assume standard LSD doesn't need a friction reducer?

If you use the castrol as above you don’t need any other additive , you will be surprised how much things quieten down

As far as i aware yes , i did a little burn out to find out, there were marks where both tyres had been , my cv8 is around 320 at the wheels so around 420 bhp and i’ve had no issues and all appears to be working as it should be , maybe a supercharged monaro can have an input as to locking but on n/a it seems to work fine , just so much quieter
