So I've recently noticed my Ro making some transmission whirring noise when on the move. Nothing in neutral when stationary.
I think and I'm hoping this is the culprit! It was just this on a previous car with same layout (300zx)...

Considering this is how they're supposed to look when new!....

My car has done 80k and you can see this boot is completely shot. Dead easy to check, if you're developing some in gear on the move whirring or whining. With my 300zx I was completely amazed by the amount of noise reduction when I fitted a new boot!

I believe this is a common problem on these cars and you are correct a damaged/ worn seal like that will permit gearbox noise into the interior of the car. There should also be some fabric sound deadener which sits on top of the rubber seal.
You could temporarily bodge it up with some additional sound deadening material just to check that theory out. In any case it needs doing.
The other usual suspects for strange noises being, prop bearing or spigot bearing, but you will usually have other symptoms if that's the case. Hopefully a simple fix.

When I had a manual SV8 with a "quick shifter" fitted, the fitter changed it to something similar, a pretty thick piece of rubber.

The link below details how to fit a short shifter kit to a GTO the US version, but does show you how you would replace the boot in question because they remove it for the shifter replacement. Do not pull off the gear knob, there is no need, just undo the 2x 10mm nuts on the shaft below and remove as one piece with the leather trim.
Its dead easy, my trims in bits waiting for a replacement boot to be ordered, I haven't done the under car bit yet.

There is no LHD/RHD difference either so you can buy from either the US or AUS, which ever works out cheaper. The part number is 92169185. They couldn't even be bothered to move the head brake lever across for the GTO!

Just to complete this thread for anyone that it might prove useful, I replaced this rubber gaiter and the transmission noise within the car has completely gone.
Would have been very easy to assume the gearbox was knackered even though it shifts up n down the gears very nicely.
It was relatively easy to change, you don't need to drop the box at all, I did it on ramps using a 13mm spanner and socket set.

a friend of mine has this that's torn and the box was whining

had it in to the garage and they pulled the box and found a damaged spigot bearing and worn input shaft bearing.

so it may have stopped the noise but it may not be the end of it

Anything is possible, but lets start with the obvious first! Gearboxes makes lots of noise, they are far from silent especially at speed. This shroud is designed to insulate the cabin from the noise along with dirt and heat.
