VXR8 reversing sensors

My VXR8's reversing sensors aren't working (not been for a while).
There is no 'clicking' from the sensors, but I think I read that if one fails the unit shuts down all the sensors. I get a "R" on dashboard and the reversing light come on.
I have checked power and connections to the unit on the rear parcel shelf and power is there. Some odd voltages on the connector to what I think are the sensors themselves.
From under the car I cannot see the back of the sensors as there is too much other metal work.
Does this mean that the rear bumper has to come off? What else can I check to help locate the fault?
