Hi, I noticed the other day that the plastic cover of the steering column in my monaro rubs slightly on the back of the steering wheel when turning lock to lock parking etc.

On closer inspection the top and bottom halves of the cover (the bits with the wiper and indicator stalks poking out) are loose and don't fit together properly. I know from the history with the car that the column was stripped and a new bearing was fitted when it was flagged as an advisory on the most recent MOT. I'm guessing the mechanic that did it didn't fit it back together properly.

I've played around with it for half an hour but can't seem to get it to clip back together. I've found two holes in the underside of the cover but no screws. Should there be screws in them? It's not a big issue but now I've spotted it I want to get it sorted.

Any advice is appreciated.

Cheers

Yes there are two cross head screws that hold both parts together. I think the top and bottom parts just clip together, then you tighten up the screws. If things won't line up try and adjust the steering colum first, it should move fore and aft as well as up and down easily. Check nothing is pinching any of the wiring inside the cowling.

If it is like the VT Commodore the top clips to the bottom so you have to semi-force them apart as mentioned
The bottom part clips onto the steering column. Undo the screw at the back nearest the firewall first.
The 2 holes near the steering wheel hook onto the steering column. There are 2 metals hooks on the bottom of the steering column.
Indicator stalk removal

Thanks for the replies.

From what's been said and that handy youtube link I'm hoping that the bottom section of the cover isn't hooked on to the column on one side. It's the bottom piece that seems loose.

I'll have another play with it tomorrow in the light and report back.

Success!

It turned out to be a bit fiddly. The top cover comes off with a gentle push as per the tutorial above - no screws. The bottom cover is held on by a single screw near the dash and two clips that attach to the metal hooks at the wheel end. As suspected the bottom half wasn't secured to the hooks, just the single screw.

I dismantled it ok but trying to get the bottom case to attach to those hooks was a b**tard. There's not quite enough space behind the back of the steering wheel to slide it in place at the angle you'd like. I ended up filing a little plastic off the bottom cover where the hooks slot in to give me a bigger margin and finally got it reattached. I dislodged the wiper stalk wires in the process but they clipped back together easily. Job done.

Thanks for your help.
