Hi Guys, can anyone tell me if the standard Monaro VXR (5.7) exhaust has an X or H configuration in it, or is it separate through out?
Cheers...

look underneath yours ?

Cheaper option is usually an H, so OEM tend to go for that

If the VXR is anything like the CV8's, the centre box is called a resonator.
Inside the resonator there is a basic layout which allows the exhaust pulse to mix. From there the gases enter the centre boxes, if fitted, and finally into the rear back boxes. The resonator also cuts out the drone at certain engine speeds.
If you replace the resonator, people generally go X-pipe for most power, of H- pipe for slightly less power but a deeper exhaust tone.

Mine's not standard, its aftermarket with an X pipe, but its far too boomy at 70-80mph or any gear 1750-2200rpm. Otherwise sounds pretty good.
AAS have quoted me £600 to replace with a new cat-back but this is without an H or X pipe configuration. £900 with H or X but then need car for 2 days not 1.

Currently after the X pipe I have 2 cherry bomb boxes then nothing else.
The resonance at 70-80 is really not acceptable though.

I would guess your problem would be the cherry bomb type rear boxes. You need some quality rear boxes which will help.
I fitted AAS headers, and a Magnaflow cat back with an X- pipe. However I thought it was too loud inside the car, so I added some sound deadening to sort the minor drone out.
It's a fine balance between what you want to hear with the windows down, and what you can put up with when the windows are up!!!!!

AAS suggested the standard car doesn't have an H or X as standard.
I'm just a little worried that it might sound pants going back to separates and lose noticeable power. Anyway, its booked in now. They've got a great reputation and can always add to it if I'm not happy enough.
Interestingly, this picture of a 5.7 Pontiac GTO shows no mixer...

Forget the GTO exhaust, it was set up for the American market only.
Don't worry about AAS they will do a good job.
Stuart usually recommends an X pipe if you go for the full cat back system. If you want it super loud you can have him fit cut outs, but TBH after 5 minutes play I close mine as its a bit much!

Then fit a proper exhaust, the x is certainly not the problem.
