Monaro Battery
Discussion
Whatever battery you buy it will need to be a 027 size to fit a Monaro battery tray. Three years ago I bought one from Euro Parts and paid a bit extra for an uprated, Exide premium, 64AH, EA 640. So far it's been fine, and compared to the original, it fires the car up straight away, in fact the car explodes into life!.
Obviously you have to shop around, as prices are all over the place.

Bosch seem to have three different tiers of battery, S3, S4 & S5.
The S5 having the highest CCA at 610.

This is useful, thanks. With the fuel pumps, supercharger and the lumpy cam in mine, it sometimes struggles. When it's hot and the fans are running, it occasionally throws a U0107 fault code on startup which puts it immediately into limp mode. Annoying as it only happens when I've stopped for petrol and the fix is to let it cool down for 10 mins before trying again. The S5 having the highest CCA at 610.

Bit of research shows this fault is often caused by a voltage drop and I've suspected for a long time I need a more manly battery.
What battery has the highest CCA ? This looks like a good bet: https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/exide/ea640/

Have you considered relocating it to the boot (apologies if you already have...)Bit of research shows this fault is often caused by a voltage drop and I've suspected for a long time I need a more manly battery.

This is not only moving about 20kg off the very front of the car and putting it somewhere useful, but also frees up your choice of batteries somewhat.
As mine could sometimes sit for relatively long periods and being as it's technically now 'inside' the car, I went for an AGM battery, this one to be exact:

Cost is obviously a bit more exciting but fk me does it crank it in to life, even if sat for weeks or hot starts etc.
I got this battery recently, made a big difference as the ute actually wants to turn over now

I did look at AGM batteries but my understanding is they can be fussy and short lived if overcharged. - e.g when a smart charger is left attached. They don’t like heat either and I’m not sure I can be bothered to relocate it.
How long have you had yours?

I just bought this to replace the old one, the car hasn't moved in, as it turns out, about 18 months, so the battery tender decided the old one (same model) wasn't holding charge properly. Before that it had never failed to start first time, even when left over winter for 5 or 6 weeks, but it was probably only about 4 years old.I have a CTEK MXS 5, as recommended by a friend who has a car dealership and thus maintains a LOT of batteries...
https://www.tayna.co.uk/battery-chargers/ctek/mxs5...
This has a specific 'AGM' mode for maintaining them, which I presume is appropriately sensitive to overcharging etc. certainly this new one has been sat being 'maintained' for 5 months and when installed in the Ro started first time.
Whether AGM is worth the money over its lifespan though I don't know, it's supposed to be a bit better for enduring longer periods of sitting whilst still providing good cranking amps, but then if the car is going to sit on a battery tender then it's probably not worth it.
Boot relocation does still open up a lot of size options though obviously.
That’s great, saves any hassle, thanks.
Just measured the old battery (can’t see the label while it’s in the car) and it seems to be 280mm wide which would translate to 096 size?
It’s been in the car since I bought it 6 years ago so I’ve never paid much attention to it before now but it does seem to be extremely tight behind the drivers headlight... you’d have to take it out before you could change a bulb.
With that in mind should I go 096 again or refit an original 027?
