Does the monaro 04 cv8 have the same set up as a vxr8 as in an ecu/module ? controling the charging rate or is it more straight forward ? i had an alternator fault it said not charging , i bought a new one from au it’s been fine for four months then lots of dash flashing tc abs etc off , turned car off it was dead , voltage tested it whilst running it was showing around 8.5 volts so clearly not charging , swapped alternator out for a used mf one and it appears fine charging around 14 volts , and has had no issues , the first alternator i took off was tested as best they could and said ok , the new one i replaced it with clearly appears not to be working , used one from mf is fine , just been unlucky with alternators maybe ? connections appeared to be fine , or is it the charging control playing up every so often , any thoughts please ?

On most cars if the alt is controlled by an ecu (smart charging) you can tell as the small plug to the alternator will have more than 2 wires going to it. The alts with built in regulator have either 1 small wire to the warning light or 2 small wires, 1 for the light & a sensing wire. On most smart charging systems a simple test is with the engine running & alt not charging if you unplugged the small wires from the alt & it still not charging it’s the alt as it’s should go to just under 14v when you unplug the small control wires.
