Well i do like tinkering with my cars , a note of caution K and N filters normally look cleaner than they actually are , i had rough running on idle on the monaro filter related it needed a good clean , then a lack of top end on the maloo again it needed cleaning , on both occasions what a difference , so as above looks of them being clean can be deceptive

I remember that K&N filters were good for 50,000 miles before they needed a clean. I always though that was bad advice, so I clean mine around the 25,000 mile mark with a proper cleaning kit. As long as you allow the filter to dry out after cleaning, and be careful with the application of the filter oil you should get a good deal of use from one.

I use to always buy K&N filters but never had the car long enough to clean them. I decided to fit a Mi16 engine in my 205 and thought I would use the K&N I had fitted the year before. I thought I would give it a clean as it was looking a bit gruby. Bought the proper K&N cleaning kit used the degreaser stuff gave it a wash and all that was left was the wire mesh and have never bought another K&N since. I was really gentle when washing it too, in fact I think I cleaned it in the sink in the house.

I've been considering changing my filter to K&N or similar, I'd be interested to see a picture of the K&N filter installed in your cars if you have one and is it the cone type? Does it make much difference? (When clean obviously )
Thanks in advance

all of my k and n are in good structural state and i have never had an issue with one maybe you were unlucky with yours , cleaning wise i would as part of a yearly service , it looked like half a beach was in mine , it’s not done a lot of miles , it was having a big impact in its higher speed driving as it was so clogged

Based on tests they did on a subaru they don’t seem to make much or any power difference ?? ,on the twist side of that there was a post on youtube on a monaro that showed an improvement and a bigger improvement with a remap , the benefit is it’s a one off buy they are easy to clean and now parts are a bit more difficult to get hold of probably a good investment , the monaro i have one in the standard air box , the maloo i went for the vcm otr one , which seems to work well power wise but also appears to be a large vacume cleaner for road debris sand and grit lol

When my Monaro was bone stock I fitted the very first mod, a VCM cold air kit complete with a K&N filter. Once fitted I drove the car around town and noticed no difference. Once warmed up and on the open road I put my foot down, the noise out of the stock exhaust was totally different. The sound was way deeper than standard. And it was obvious that there was now a lot more air being consumed by the engine? So on that scientific test it appears these things do work!
