Fitting AP brakes
Discussion
Hello all,
I have managed to locate a full set of AP's to fit to my Monaro CV8, ( 05 small boot ), Walkinshaw's can't fit them until July. Can anybody talk me through fitting the kit myself. I am aware you need to get both rear wheels off the ground in order to get the rear disc's off, and the wheel hub's need to be super clean. The two issues are, will my Russell branded hoses fit the AP's, and I'm worried about drilling the front end to make the calliper fit correctly.
Thanks John

Hi John,
I fitted a full set of AP's to my Monaro, although mine is the small boot VXR, so not sure what differences there are, I fitted a set of Russell Braided Lines which I bought from MF, and from memory, the only real issue I had was that I needed to purchase some new bolts that fix the front calipers to the hub assemblies ( the originals were too short ), important to buy the correct tensile strength bolts, the strength is printed on the head of the bolts. Also, yes you are correct, make sure the hub's are spotless were the discs mate. Did you buy the brakes new, or the used set advertised recently ? reason I ask is the new set I bought, came with installation documents which I still have if you need to reference.
All the best,
Nick.

The brakes I'm after are new. I have had some advice about fitting AP's from Andy ( M/F ) and due to the fact there is little margin for error when drilling and checking disc run out, I would rather let the professionals sort the job out........rather than me balls it right up!!!!!!
Regards John

I fitted the later VXR calipers to my CV8 it is the same, you need to drill out the bracket to 14mm they are fitted bolts so the 14mm has to be drilled correctly to keep the fitted effect, anyone wanting their brackets drilled I can do them on a radial drill so they are correct, FOC
Thanks. Not quite right on my part then but I remember you having to drill larger holes for your brakes. The term “fitted bolts” means the shank part of the bolt is a nice fit in the bracket and not a sloppy fit.
A radial drilling machine is one that you can fix the plate to be drilled to the flat bed of the machine, then you can perfectly centre the drill to the hole to be drilled and lock that too in position so it can’t wander.
This gives you perfectly centered holes that are parallel through the bracket and when you come to bolt the bracket to the hub all will align perfectly. That’s the way to do it correctly.
You could drill them out with a hand drill, if your drill can take 14mm ?
If you want them done correctly just post the brackets to me and I will drill them for you, no problem.

Snowwolf,
Thanks for the detailed explanation and the kind offer to drill out the brackets. My car is now going in for some additional work,( does it ever end?) so I'll get a job lot done. I have to say it's nice to know that there are still some generous people out there willing to help out. Thanks again.

I fitted AP's to my 04 CV8, all fairly straightforward but I did use a dial gauge to make sure the discs fitted to the hubs with the minimum of run out. There was a surprising amount of difference in the 5 possible positions that they can go on.
There was also a lengthy bedding in process described in the instructions, I'll see if I can find them.....
