My Monaro performed the ancient ceremony of the absolute max and absolute zero oil pressure indicated on the standard dash top dial the other day.

The symptoms are very much like previous threads going back years and I know I need to get an oil pressure test done too. I didn't get the oil light come on, but I did get "check engine"

It is almost certainly the oil pressure sender switch which lives on the back of the engine above the filter. The question is who can supply me with one these days?

When my oil pressure switch gave up I spoke to Stuart at AAS in Newcastle upon Tyne. He sent me one through the post.
You will need a deep 27mm socket to do the job.

Thanks for the info. I've heard good things about AAS.

Hopefully we won't need a Cockney/Geordie translator.

I suppose other parts suppliers are available like NWJ and Walkinshaw?

Are squirrel fingers needed as well as the 27mm socket? I think I'll be getting a mechanic to do it for me. I'd probably nause it up anyway.

Rest assured we do speak English up here, however now and again we are still prone to eating each other!
Anyway, I found the hardest part was unclipping the sensor wire without breaking the clip. Once the socket was on it was easy, even for me. Don't forget to clean around the sensor before you remove it. You really don't want any dirt getting in there.

Isn't the gauge for the oil pressure done from the sump?

I know on my 04 the one at the rear of the block behind the inlet was faulty but didn't do anything to the gauge at all. Just triggered warnings constantly.

The only thing I can say is that the oil pressure switch at the rear of the inlet manifold was faulty on my car. The oil pressure gauge went down to zero when I was driving, which I'm sure you can imagine, gave me a heart attack!!!!
Anyway, when I replaced the unit, I fired up the engine and all was well. I believe this is a common problem on these oil pressure switches.
As for anything related to the engine sump I really don't know.

That would be an 04 VXR then? That uses a seperate switch for the gauge.

Just to let those who are interested know what happened in the end....

I was getting a max reading on the oil pressure gauge when I turned the key to the first position, then it sank to zero on starting the engine. This was followed by lots of jukebox noises and "Check engine" in the digital display, but no oil light.

I got a new switch sent out to me by Stuart at AAS who kindly also provided workshop manual copies showing where to look..... thanks Stuart!

My local garage fitted it without fuss and everything is working properly again, so I'll call that a fix!.

Thanks to the Fish too for free advice and all those previous threads on the issue that had me pretty sure I had nothing to worry about.
