I was following a newish 1 series from the cricket ground - was that you by any chance?

Also had a nice chat with a chap while out shopping earlier today. Love how these cars get such a good reaction smile

I'm guessing you were driving something other than your Monaro? Would have been good to stop for a chat otherwise (and to hear your new exhaust!).

Sadly I'm just in Canterbury to visit family, then back to Cornwall where I'm currently living. Shame that most of the meets are so far away now!

Yes I was in my wife's car , that's the problem with having cars that are rare in this country there scattered all over the place

Makes the thrill of seeing/ hearing one that much better though!

Best thing is that our cars are always owned by enthusiasts. No one buys one by accident just because it's the most expensive version of the 3 series or A6 - people buy them cos they just want one biggrin

The beach run on Top Gear did it for me too hehe Jez Clarkson also included a Monaro in 9th place in one of his books in a top 10 garage list, which just sealed the deal for me smile

Good car to have passed down in the family too. Lucky kids!

Ive tried to find part two of this episode, Sadly part one is all I can find. When Clarkson put his foot down and thundered off into the distance and said, (something like) 'it does what a muscle car should..it puts a great big smile on your face'.......
From that point on I was sold...I had to have one. I wonder if he has any idea how much of an effect this episode had on petrol heads?

My son watches Dave avidly and he surprised me and taped (recorded on the Digi box)the whole episode so I have it for posterity. I watch it every now and again as mine is the same model and colour glad though mine wasn't used as all that sand and sea water must have been disastrous to the underside of the car.

I'm sure someone on here owned that very car. I believe Vauxhall super cleaned the car after that episode. The car suffered no ill effects from the salt bath .......which is nice to know

That would be me. It was not sprayed white though! It was fairly clean underneath although it has been rust treated since that episode.

It must have been good owning the holly grail car that literally made most of us want one because Vauxhall didn't really advertise the car it was basically your car on top gear that did all the work

Very true, I could never understand why Vauxhall went to the trouble of importing these cars, but never really advertised the fact. If it wasn't for Top Gear they might have had a really hard time shifting them. When you think about it Monaro's and VXR8's were quite rare when new, and 14yrs later, they are almost mythical. Still at least most petrol heads know what these cars are about.

That's right it's as though Vauxhall didn't want to sell the car , as in oz under the Holden name and America as the Pontiac they really sold well. If when you check how many Vauxhall sold from monaro through to vxr8 the figures don't really stand out as record breaking
