I know that this question has been asked before, and i have done a bit of research but I thought I'd ask on here. Headers; I fancy a change but don't want to decat and don't want the system to be too noisy - I use the car too much for ear splitting journeys, including four up family cross country trips. Therefore I have reached the conclusion (right or wrong) that shorty headers would suit me best.

Now the presumptuous bit - I expect that the shorties will fit onto my cat-back magnaflow system, seeing as it fits onto the OE manifolds? Also, that long tube headers would require a bit of work to accommodate my system - including the requirement for cats? Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks in advance for all the advice.

Long tube headers are more efficient than short ones but cost more. The reason manufacturers use cast manifolds is the cost.

If you've got the 6.0 LS2 VXR Monaro I believe the standard shorty headers from the 5.7 LS1 VXR Monaro are a worthy upgrade if you can find a set.

Failing that i would recommend AAS in newcastle who custom make mid length headers for the monaro.

That'd be the ideal; I hear that pretty much anything is better than the LS2 headers. I'll speak to AAS also - thank you.

I find that all the noise is outside the car apart from if I have decats in then there is a noticeable difference in the cockpit . I have longtubes 200 cell cats and wortec cat back and it is nice and v8 noise outside but very civilised in side. Take the cats out and that's a different story.

I have fitted to my Monaro, mid length headers and sports cat from AAS. This is joined up to a Magnaflow cat back system. On top of that I had AAS fit some QTP electric cut outs to the rear of the car. However, (believe it or not) I also like a quiet interior when I just want to cruise, As a result I fitted sound deadening panels under the carpet, so I have the best of both worlds.

If you fit a set of shorty headers from a 5.7 you will need the cats that go with them to match up to your catback. The longtubes do not make much more noise, it's the sports Cats that add to the volume. AAS may be your best option.

Headers will make no difference or very minimal difference to the sound of the car

Interesting, so a set of headers - short, mid or long - shouldn't sound any louder than my standard manifolds?

This ^^^

I noticed a change in sound when we went from cast Holden headers to tube VXR8 headers. Slightly more noise and a slightly deeper tone.

When we then swapped to the 1 7/8 headers it changed again but that is probably also due to the rest of the system that was fitted at the same time.

Changing headers is minimal Sound difference. its only when you change the full exhaust system you truly get a complete sound difference

I have headers and a full wortec system. It's very loud when you floor it, and loud enough for the street to hear it when I start up on a morning.

Perfectly civilised inside though when cruising around.

Edit - and it sounds glorious!

I have a full Wortec exhaust and my headers where hand made by Chris Bourton at Hardnocks speed shop in Bicester. Its the sports cats that make the difference in the sound. Its a bit loud on start up but good for cruising around and amazing on full throttle especially in a tunnel.

Happy new year to you all

Think I saw badgers post on doing your headers. Will one day get him to do a full exhaust for me when I can have the car in to him for a couple of weeks.

Headers will definitely make the car sound different, and louder.
