I've noticed this horrible scraping noise from the front of the engine.

It doesn't do it all the time, only intermittent. I haven't put my finger on what makes it start/stop yet.

It did it once after a motorway stretch then a slow town stretch. Also it started maybe 5 minutes after a cold start.

I don't use Aircon, so don't think it is anything to do with that.

Warning - may be loud!

Thank you

Mark

I think it could be your water pump bearing. What do others think?

Interesting. I have just fixed a water leak. One of the heater hoses behind the engine has rubbed through.

I wonder if air was getting into the pump causing problems?

Whatever the noise is....I assume you feel it is a lot louder than whatever noise is supposed to be in the video ?

Because there really isnt anything that stands out there too much.

It wouldn't be air getting in. If it is your water pump its just worn the bearing out and as Thunder storm says also check the idler pulley's. You will have
to take the belt off to find out.

buy a mechanics stethoscope .. then touch the idlers pulley water pump etc... if its one of those the noise will really stand out

A long stout screw driver to your ear with the tip on the bearing also works. Carefully, now!

hehe I'm quite clumsy. If I'd tried that expect a post from me in the Health Matters forum asking how to remove a screwdriver from the inner ear!

Just take the belts off and check for lift easy enough and no danger, engine off. Simples.

Thanks all. I'll have a poke around at the weekend, unless life gets in the way.

The potential shopping list for this car is getting long already!

Had a similar noise. Was the tensioner bearing running dry.
Put some more grease in
