Hi Everyone,

My HSV GTS has just been up on the ramps for it's MoT and the rust has gone rampant in the last 18 months frown

Sills are shot and there is serious rust showing through on the chassis legs in the engine bay, so I reckon it's totally uneconomic to repair it - the garage agree, so it looks like another one off the road frown

Sad day, but does anyone here know who buys these for Salvage (I've contacted Gary) or anywhere else I should approach?

Particularly annoying in that I've just had the rear calipers remanufactured and they're looking great!

At least I've still got the Ute (that I've had fully cavity waxed) smile

Cheers everyone...

maybe for a garage but I'm sure it would be worth while for a home restoration. Any pics?

Sorry to read that frown think it's a reminder to owners to protect under and around your pride and joy, these cars are not built for UK weather, if you don't do any preventive care, even to the point of not using the car in our winter weather, they will rust away to nothingness

that's a shame - for the right person I'm sure the welding wouldn't be too much, but it's probably a labour of love thing..

totaly,,,,im on my second r8 now,,,and tbh i cant believe the lack of underneath protection that has been given to these cars,,
i would have thought at least the ones made and earmarked to be shipped over here would have had a bit of undersealing /rust protection,
dunno whos got my first r8,,but that got the full bhoona with waxoil, ect in the time i had her ,and now my genf atm is getting the same,,its a messy buisness,,but when you hear the opening thread its a reminder,,,
needs to be done,,

Having said that, my VT2 hasn't been treated (yet), but is clean underneath and has never had any advisories on MOTs for rust...

Thanks guys,

It's pretty bad in the sills - as you say it could be done as a labour of love, but I just don't have the time...

Gary's going to be collecting it soon, so thanks to everyone who pm'd me.

I spent all evening checking my Ute over, it's in much better nick underneath, even if it needs a few scuffs sorting out above...

I can only echo what others have said - if this one had been cavity waxed from new it might not be so rotten now...

For anybody who is going to DIY rust proof their car, try Dynax S50, it's a ball ache of a job, and it really will stink the car out for a week or two, but worth it.
I've rust protected my Monaro about three times in tha last ten years, and only found a small patch of rust on a chassis rail. It was a bit odd as to why it started to rust at that point, I think it may have been a stone impact damage. So it does pay to check the underside every year.

I've used a lot of Bilt-Hamber products, and they've always been very good - used the S50 on my 944 - one can in each sill/rear wing cavity smile
Their 2-part epoxy paint is great for undersides, stupidly tough... over their electrox ultra primer it works wonders...

I would love to properly paint the underside of my car with that paint, it would make it better than new. But........what a hyper ball acher to complete.

I had a bit of rot on the strut tower (No 26) ,along with the front spring caps which had collapsed !! Ill post piccs later maybe. Its been welded with a double layer of stainless, to be sure to be sure.
Not found any more rust yet.

I can weld though so I'm not really bothered, gives me something to do.
Its the running gear that's of value anyway, the shells worth nothing.

Damn!

We don't pay all too much attention to rustproofing. Modern cars in Australia don't get rusty, even when they live by the beach. There would be a handful of roads in the ski fields which would be salted in winter. I've never seen a VT locally which would suffer that kind of corrosion!
