I am curious if anyone has opened them up for extra cooling purposes? I was thinking that it would be good for supercharger cooling, well help a little bit perhaps. Thoughts??

The only downside I can see is that rain water will splash all over engine.

It's been tried and discussed at length before and doesn't add cooling but does indeed splash and stains all over the engine.

I didn't realise they weren't open....

Mine are open, can confirm that moisture goes everywhere, Has ruined my underbonnet insulation material around the holes too.

I'm not sure how true it is but someone told me that opening up the nostrils ruins the airflow through the radiator and can cause overheating problems!

That's what I heard too. You're creating a higher pressure area behind the radiator which reduces the flow across the radiator core.

Nice to have your thoughts on it as I wasn't sure which way it would go, I can understand that the engine will get a bit of water going in towards it. I think I'll leave things as they are then. I actually though someone might say that it upsets the handling at high speeds with air flow.

I know that running them with of without at thunder road made no difference but as people say you will get a dirty engine bay lol

If i remember correctly, the bonnet vent's on the Monaro were only made to please the Americans as it was sold there as A Pontiac GTO, which back in the 70's had vents.
In the real world they do allow some hot air to escape, so they do aid cooling, but they are not really necessary.
last week when it was quite hot I was stuck in traffic and my cooling fans kicked in and I noticed a vast amount of shimmering heat escaping from both vents. These LS motor's really do get very hot that's for sure.

I opened up my vents many years ago, must admit that the CV8 does seem to run a wee bit cooler without the restrictions on the vents, not sure about the VXR, also as mentioned when in stationnary traffic huge amount of shimmering emerges from them, the only time I have seen that amount of heat haze escaping from an engine bay was a friends Ferrari 550 Maranello.
Only downside is salt crystals on the bonnet felt and a slightly dirty engine.

I think someone should invent a proper ram air kit for the Monaro. You could direct the incoming air from the vents, through a filter, then directly into the throttle body. No dirty engine and nice cool air to lower the temps, and a bit more power smile

There's is one already available.

Look where the hole is on the underside. Channels a little air directly to the air box. And the rear holes are basically for venting out.
