Monaro to 911, or vice versa I guess.
Discussion
Morning,
I've had my monaro 6 years now and it's finally time for a change narrowed it down to a 911 either 996 or maybe a basic lower end of the price spectrum 997.
Like the monaro has been the porsche would be my third car so maybe an older 996 would fit the bill as opposed to the newer and maybe more daily user friendly 997.
Anyone had experience of them compared to monaros. I'm sure I'll miss the v8 soundtrack. My 2 owner 48k cv8 will be in the PH sale section soon.

Lol at beetle I fancy a change and when looking for something I think that could fill the gap of the ro it's a short list. I wanted an M3 E92 the v8 as on paper it's a 4 seater coupe with a v8 but had a look at one and the wife doesn't like them however looked at a 996 C4S in silver and just loved the look and different feel than the monaro.
Raving I wish my budget would stretch to a 997 turbo although jury out on pdk, why were you bored was it a bit clinical ?

I was just kidding. I enjoy the 911s and thought I'd post the opposite response.
Had a new engine in mine 4 years ago. Pretty rare on a Gen 2, TBH. More common on 996 and Gen 1 997 (non-turbo models).
It's quite a contrast to the Monaro and VXR8, but I'd probably do the same if I had the time again. Once I got the first 911 I started doing trips to Europe and it works well for those. I can get in enough stuff for the two weeks and have room to bring plenty back.

Bit like the Gtrs I had , very fast capable cars but soooo boring Raving I wish my budget would stretch to a 997 turbo although jury out on pdk, why were you bored was it a bit clinical ?
Maybe due to no clutch pedal or gear lever , you dont feel involved with it
997 engines can have big problems
I'm looking n/a and manual doing some research into the engine issues. The more I read the more my head says no but I'll be honest he part keeps saying do it. I'll only do around 5k a year mileage what's the chances of it exploding......gulp.
Put an ls1 in it.

Porsches excel in all areas. If you want it as an only car it will commute Monday to Friday, track day on Saturday and still scrub up well for a run out to get a pub lunch on a Sunday - before doing it all again the following week.
Unfortunately the lack of vices means it's not quite special and the numbers produced mean it's not rare.
If you want to scratch the 911 itch then nothing else will come close. Buy wise and you will get your money back. Buy with rose tinted glasses on and you can easily lose your shirt.
Good luck with whatever you choose, but personally for a 3rd car, I'd keep the Monaro.

We have both a Monaro and a 997 Carrera S with a factory fitted performance pack. They are very different experiences. I used to be a really anti-Porsche snob...but I now eat my words. It's a fab machine and, as has been said before, can turn its hand to anything. I find it very involving being a manual, is really well built and whoever spec'ed the interior originally, got it spot on. If you can't afford both, and you need to scratch the 911 itch, go do it, but again, as has been mentioned...buy wisely...
If you have limited budget be very carefull
997 gen2 are much better for low risk and reliability
996 or early 997 (non turbo) have the usual engine big risk factor - IMS bearing etc
Have had a few in my time and the best looking and lowest mileage one i had was the one that bit back and IMS let go - new engine not much change out of £12k
Didn't realise how unreliable and risky they are until I had the problem car so i don't buy them anymore apart from later 997s
Even if its a weekend car the bottom of the engine can let go anytime without warmimg

I wouldn't go that far. I'm on #5 now but maybe I've been lucky.Never had an issue with any Boxster / Cayman and had a few
I would say keep the monaro and few mods and save a fortune
