Hi all,

I've heard some rumours that the tax on our cars may be as high as £2k for one year from April dropping to £140 per year thereafter if you keep the car - is this true or is there more to it?

What is it with all this scare mongering on the Internet with new tax rates - so ye just rumours

Best to read the changes in full on the government website

The new Tax rates are only for "new cars" registered from April 2017 as CO figures have reduced alot over the last few years

It does not affect used cars

first thing .Gov website says -

"The way Vehicle Excise
Duty (VED) is calculated
is changing for some
vehicles registered from
1 April 2017. All vehicles
registered before this date
will not be affected."

I called local Ford garage about ordering a new Mustang when the 2018 ones are released (sorry) and asked about the effect of the new tax brackets on the car. He explained that the current first year tax is £1120 and this is built into the price of the car anyway. He said the worst that will happen is new cars of this size will go up by £880 to make it to £2000. Bonus is after the first year car tax is only £140.
That said, I now want a GTS and wonder if it's the same situation from Vauxhall

For cars over £40k the penalty lasts a few years.

Don't think it will make any difference to any of us with cars already just if you buy a new car.

And I thought that us Yanks had some of the worst when it comes to 'taxation without representation'. My real estate taxes alone are $8,000/year.
