HSV E2 Maloo UK Value?
Discussion
Hello All,
I am a long time lurker of piston heads, however finally, I need some help/advice.
I am looking at bringing a HSV E2 VE R8 Maloo 6 Speed (minter) Red, full history with 40,000ks over to UK for a month on a driving holiday. The Maloo is basically stock, does have a Walkingshaw Exhaust and Walkinshaw Growler Style intake which sounds the business. It also has the E3 20 inch genuine HSV staggered Pentagon wheels that the previous owner fitted.
The cost of shipping it back to Australia is about the same price as compliance and import duty (ish).
However not being a very popular car over in the UK, I was trying to work out what it would be worth if sold in the UK. In Australia it's a $40-$45kAUD ask.
The closest thing I have come across in the UK is a VZ Maloo which was advertised for 22,000 pounds with similar k's. But an E2 VE Maloo is worth nearly twice what a VZ Maloo is worth here. There was also a Supercharged VF SSV for 47500 pounds, which here would fetch about the same as the VE E2 R8 Maloo.
What do you guys think would be a fair price in the UK, especially now the VF Maloos are being sold in the UK new as VXRs it will make the Maloo a little less rare I guess.
Any ideas or thoughts on value would be appreciated.
Cheers
Andrew

Somewhere between £23k and £27k would be my guess, once it was registered for the road in the UK - similar in price to the E2 GTS that changed hands last year.
If you don't want the hassle of dealing with the registration then I reckon that will knock £5k off that value.

Thanks for the figures ARAF, much appreciated. That's about what this example is worth in Australia. Which might explain why not many get imported to the UK. If you don't want the hassle of dealing with the registration then I reckon that will knock £5k off that value.

I'll buy it if it's a manual
It's a manual and very low k's. Let me know if you are genuinely interested and what sort of money. There's only 11 manual E2 R8s for sale in Aus at the moment the next lowest kilometre car is double this one. It's hard to find one in good nick here, it's almost a shame they appeal so much as work vehicles. Interiors get neglected and k's racked up all too often. But that's what makes them appeal to the masses.
I guess we'll see what the market does over here as the production comes closer to an end.

I think at those figures it would go pretty quickly. I have looked at bringing a later one in myself, but I can't make the figures stack up to what you can get from Vauxhall for a VXR Maloo so have never gone any further. There's plenty here that would say higher prices are achievable, but it depends how much of your life you want to spend with it in the classifieds. I did think about making a cheeky bid myself (as Mrs Araf doesn't like the GenF lights), but we've got our SSV just how we want it, apart from a bit of paint, so I can't see that happening.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

I prefer the original E series (white or red) with all the optional extras, but would settle for the E2. Price would depend on whether you've got it UK road registered or not. I'm waiting for one to come up for sale but they literally never crop up.There's only 11 manual E2 R8s for sale in Aus at the moment the next lowest kilometre car is double this one. Thanks everyone for the replies. Really do appreciate it.
I'll try and get on to Walkinshaw and get a price put on it properly. That way I'll know whether to go down the import and compliance route, or the bring the beast back to Aus. I've had an E60 M5 since 2009 and started playing with a few other cars like Evos and XJRs over the last few years. Still have them all, but the ute has such an awesome presence on the road.
Strangely enough, since the ute liner is basically brand new, i'm scared to use the ute tray for fear of scratching it. It's the most impractical practical vehicle in the world.
I hope you all have a great weekend.
Cheers

ARAF , if you own a car down under then i thought import duty was different if you prove you owned it for a while ?
I believe you have to own it here when registered for a year before you can sell it if you want to avoid import duty / vat as this Maloo is ex EU so never paid any VAT. Silly rules I know Ian may no different. But I bought a Ute of a guy who had it new in Australia and had imported it here for 6 months and it was customs restricted for a further 6 months so the duty/vat still had to be paid
Importing this would be a completely futile exercise.
As a previous poster mentioned - the vehicle must be owned for 6 months in Oz, as well as 12 months in the UK.
In the interim, you also have 6 weeks sailing time (in which time you are without your car in Oz....so what are the impacts and overheads of that?), as well as IVA (or whatever it is called) - preparation work in the UK - so you'd be unable to drive it for probably 2 weeks at least at the UK end (so your month of driving is nearly up).
Your vehicle would therefor be subject to 10% duty (straight market value - possibly what you paid for it - presumably a reduction for amortisation from new) - plus VAT at 20% - which is compounded on the cost of shipping and handling - presumably about 3500AUD presuming RORO.
I don't know what the Aus value of your car is - but assuming it is $40K, you are effectively up for another $4K in duty, $6K in shipping and compliance, and $10K in VAT. Which means you need to get comfortably over $60K AUD to make it worth while...comfortably over. This translates to 36K GBP.....which you must then convert back into AUD when you go home (unless you want a pile of pounds sitting around the house), so kiss goodbye to an extra 1%.
Furthermore....I guess you are presuming that you will certainly sell the car exactly after the time you finish driving, and need to fly home.....otherwise you'll have to leave it with someone, and good luck with that (storage costs, handling costs, their commission, etc).
All in all....I'd say not a detailed plan that you have.
If all you want is a vehicle to drive - then buy and sell one whilst there, or rent one. If what you want is to sell for a profit, you'll need to move there permanently (which does not need to be permanent, but needs to look permanent). As you aren't contemplating this.....it's not workable.
Rent an M4 whilst you are there - a much nicer car.

and just quickly - if you were planning on bring it back to Oz - you would still need an import approval.
Sure, it may be your car you are re-importing, but you need an Oz VIA nonetheless. Add $55 to the equation, and around 5 weeks. You will almost certainly need a broker to arrange shipping, handling, port fees, etc - you may also have to undergo an AQIS (Quarantine) inspection on the car - which could add hundreds to the equation.
If what you are really aiming for is to send HSV to the UK to make a profit.....then you'd need to be prepared to own it at least 6 months in Oz, 2 months sailing and at least 12 months in UK - plus costs of compliance, storage, insurance - etc
I would suggest that this is not feasible.

Just to add to this, depending on location in UK & Aus, it takes 8 weeks door to door as long as your container doesn't get chosen for inspection. Last year I exported around 60 vehicles in Aus, and only 1 was held up at customs.
Were they all holdens? Looking at sending my landcruiser ute back to uk at moment who you recommend for shipping? Gassing Station | HSV & Monaro | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
