S/Charged LS1 Cam suggestions please
Discussion
Well I guess I'm going to pull my finger out and do something!
I have been thinking far too long and need to get something done with my ute.
Basically I have an LS1 Harrop HH122 with a N/A cam in it with too much overlap and have problems with poisoning myself driving with the window down, I've mentioned this problem on here before but need to sort it out.
I am thinking of putting a cam in but just need a bit of advise.
What I would like to do is fit the cam get on the boat head for England and put on rolling road for set up.
Would it be ok to use map that is in the car and drive to Ric Woods dyno and get it tuned?
Plus I need a cam but which one?

n/a cam is very vague...as is too much overlap. So exactly what do you have ?I have been thinking far too long and need to get something done with my ute.

What emissions constraints do you need to adhere to ? Presumably if your cam is that bad...there must be none ?
But really...you could choose from hundreds of cams. So what do you need, what do you want, and what is the current setup ?
Just a bog standard engine ? Bog standard heads ? valvetrain ? etc etc
This one? http://www.engpwrsys.com/index.php?act=viewCat&...
Out of interest, what's the spec of the cam with too much overlap?

All I know is that it had a Comp cams XR cam fitted (on cam at 4000rpm) then at a later date HH122 S/C fitted. Apparently two well known LS engine people did some calculations and thought it would be ok to use. This cam was left in as the guy I bought it off liked the lumpy idle and was only really using it for comp events.
When I bought the ute I just presumed it was running rich and just needed fettling.
Running pretty much standard engine, Yellaterra R/R's 1.7 and Mafless, 9psi pulley and no cats. Wortec headers and 3" twin system
And no M.O.T to do each year either.
Wotrec mapped the ute.
Ute is for track days and hill climbing.

If it's that bad just change the cam? Or have you a major fueling issue then map that? You don't need to drive all the way across the Uk to sort it.
Get Wortec to sort it if they did it originally? I'm sure they'll have maps to fall back on.

If its the ute i think it is, yes, its a pretty aggresive cam! Unless somethings changed, gone wrong etc, its not overly rich as such, just the side effect of a lot of overlap. It works fine, but not overly pleasant if you stand behind it!When I bought the ute I just presumed it was running rich and just needed fettling.

The simplest option is just to stick to something like a typical stage 1 or 2 cam from any of the usual sources. Given you dont state anything about valvetrain upgrades...ie std heads, std springs, std valves etc etc....options will be limited to some degree. Although if they were all standard, that makes it a little odd about the existing camWhen I bought the ute I just presumed it was running rich and just needed fettling.

So unless you're buying a package of cam/springs etc etc...then it will be hard to recommend anything other than something quite tame unless you know what components you already have and how suitable they might be
Keeping with mild and not going crazy on lift...something like these would do

Usually the worst decision you can make with a camshaft...is opting for too big

If its not a daily and needs no MOT then I see no problem.
It's not your car though and it's owner says it's a problem lol.Must admit, I do hate lumpy cams. Some love em, some hate em..I'm most definitely the latter.
If it was in an engine and a consequence of it making say 2-3000hp...then I could forgive it. Or perhaps something specific that needed to pull say 8, 9000rpm then again I could forgive a little lumpy down low.
But for most boosted engines, just isnt really any call for it, and rarely any benefit from it.
BoostedLS1. I presume that Wortec can just remap my ecu if I send it to them if I fit a new cam?
Monkfish1. Yes Daves old ute, and I am sure you know how fumey it is.
Stevieturbo. As far as I am aware it has a set of dual valve springs and I think the heads are standard 241's . I think i'd probably fit a cam kit with springs to suit the cam as long as I can do it with the heads on. Someone on here might know the utes engine specs as Dave Smith who I bought it from was a little vague on specs. The cam you suggested would do I should think but may have to see about MyM8V8's cam also. A kit would be best.
FredBloggs. I love the lumpy cam but headaches that aspirins don't get rid of and not being able to go to sleep at night after driving the ute for the day is not ideal by any means. Everytime I take it out of the garage the oxygen alarm starts going off.
If the Isle of Man M.O.T's it would be a nightmare to pass.

I'd think Wortec could reflash if you gave them your cam and engine specs.
If not one of the US tuners could certainly do it. Stevie would know who to contact for that.
Also, Ringram (Richard Ingram) on here could do it for you and he's a bit of a cam specialist as well as being the EFI Live agent.
