I've noticed that many leggy Monaros end up being offered for buttons. A couple of £6K cars have absolutely been breaker-bait. Is it time for us to lose another bunch of Monaros frown

I think they haven't reached that point where enough people want to save them so they will end up being broken for parts. I'd also imagine there are a lot of rusty ones out there.

This is where I plan to step in at some point and plan to get another one to bring back to life. All the welding on the old cavaliers should assist me ;¬)

I guess the issue will be buying one before the breakers get it as and when the time comes.

Some of them dropped to around £5k about 5 years ago. Prices seem to have gone up somewhat since then. At these kind of values with the LS drivetrain they are tempting as breakers. But there weren't that many imported so that may help values in the future. I've had mine since new in 2004. If the values go the way that they have with the Lotus Carlton, if mine is worth £20k+ in 7 years time I might be tempted to sell it!

I might be missing something, but I can't see why a high mileage Monaro would be almost worthless to the point of having to break them up for parts?
If I don't get at least 350,000 miles out of mine I would be a bit upset!!!!
I might even make a warranty claim!!!!
TBH I have not encountered a rusty one yet.

About 5 years ago the same thing happened. As they dip to the £5k/£6k mark, they become worth more in parts than as complete cars so breakers buy them. Parts for these things are super expensive, especially VXR bumpers etc.

And they rust from the underneath due to poor/non existent rust proofing.

Is it not better to buy a well used, well maintained car rather than a garage queen with low miles and hardly anything been done to it? I'll be parting with my VXR in the spring with 124k on the clock and the thought of someone buying it to break for parts would horrify me! I've put nearly £8k into it to make it pretty much mechanically perfect now so how much do you think it would be worth?

About £8K-9K if you're a trader, less if you're a private seller. There's a nice black VXR Ro with 102,000 for £8.5K on the market...

Selling a good Monaro for 8-9k with thousands of £'s worth of extras is really criminal!...and 120 odd thousand miles is nothing for these engine's....
You could spend that amount on a high mileage crap heap!
I dispare!

Just after I bought my first Monaro (was considered high mileage at 85k at the time!) there was one featured on here that was 5k, and I believe it was bought by someone on here. 5k Monaros aren't around now unless someone is desperate, although you have to bear in mind that most people still think 100k and the car is scrap, hence the depressed values.

Mine has 118k on it but 80k were confirmed motorway miles. In the last 6 years its done hardly anything, has a full Wortec, remap etc and drives superb. I paid £8250 for mine and was happy to do so, a car is worth as much as someone is willing to pay. A well looked after car is a decent bet even with high miles on such a strong engine.

Take the RX8 for instance, I looked at a R3 before the Monaro at 38k on an 09 plate but hadn't been looked after and compression was dangerously low, I only found this out after paying a deposit on the basis that I would pay for a specialists health check (glad I did best £60 ever at a £7k car I could of gone for an older or higher mileage car off the forum and had piece of mind that it had received the TLC that it needed to make it a decent buy.

History and a decent inspection is worth its weight

That is now my car, after PhilPhil on here had it. I wish I'd seen the original ad, as I wasn't aware of the A/C and gearbox issues when buying it, but that's my fault for getting excited and not doing the checks I normally would have. I recently had it up for sale, having been torn between spending the money to put the issues right and keeping it or just selling it on and spending another £5k or so to get a nicer Monaro. I indeed only got offers of £5k.

Well that depends. To most people, the only thing less attractive than a 6.0L Vauxhall is a one with 12 owners and an intergalactic mileage. It's not just the engines that wear out, it's everything else too and as said above, drive them through winter with no under body protection and they fall apart.

There are several people (myself included) who use theirs as a second or third car. They are often garaged, have low mileage and get an annual service and check over. May not turn a wheel in poor weather but that's what keeps them box fresh and if I were looking for another, that's what I'd go for.

They rust join in front chassis rail, and to the side of rear sub frame mounts and sills they need wax in all box sections to slow its progress. Engines are engines bearings, rings, followers, guides wear just as quick as any thing else.

Yep, less than 1000 miles and completely standard.
