Confession. Monaro TT.
Discussion
Hello all.
I returned back to the forum a few weeks ago.
I was in the market for a replacement Monaro.
I had been chatting to James at Elite regarding Emma's old Twin Turbo.
I kept it quiet until the deal was done, but Saturday I picked it up.
Thanks to James at Elite for the honest, professional and knowledgable service.
James - you was correct about the starter motor when hot! I went to the shops on the way home, and had to wait about 2 hours for it to start - RAC in attendance. I'll be talking to the Fish.
But all as discussed before the sale so of course - honest. James made me aware of the starter problem before I signed on the line.
I drove it 2 hours home from Elite. I was amazed at the drivability of the car. It felt no different to my old standard VXR, until you touched the accelerator! Then it just went nuts.
Sorting the insurance was interesting also. I've never been interviewed by a car insurance company before. Basically I had to give a CV (verbal) of my previous car history. But I can fully understand why.
I'm quite sure the premium would be different if my previous history was only 1.6's.
Not that you buy an Monaro, or any V8, or even a V8TT for fuel economy, but indicated on the computer was 31 mpg. An hour on A-roads, an hour on the motorway. 31 mpg indicated. Very good. I was expecting 5mpg!
I don't think I'll be doing much to it. Other than sending it to a bodyshop to tart up, realign the bumpers etc.
I thought about looking into the 900bhp figures until I drove it! I think its on the border of drivability.
Obviously in the wet, there's no point going above 1700 rpm. But in the dry, 700 bhp (claimed) is about right when considering traction - IMHO. We will see!
My Mrs is asking what have I bought her for Christmas if I've bought this for myself!

Hell of a car...I see you're in Bristol, I'll keep an eye (and ear) out...great if this is now a local car.
I doubt the fuel scalar has been adjusted for the injectors, so try calculating the fuel consumption the manual way.
Yep, North Bristol so local now. The car is nuts. I doubt the fuel scalar has been adjusted for the injectors, so try calculating the fuel consumption the manual way.
I'll get it down to Bristol the next Sunday meet - second Sunday of each month from memory.
I found a bit of dry ringroad today so had a chance to use more than 30% throttle! It is amazing. Exactly what I was hoping it would be.
But you really have to be careful with it.
I did nod to a red VXR8 - with a bit of rear boot damage on the A34/M4 junction on my way home from Elite.
Great to be back in the family again!
I'm not bothered about the fuel to be fair. It's a weekend toy.
The wife and I both have boring diesels for every day.
The colour has really grown on me as I preferred the fastest colour - black. But it does look great.

Leigh. Glad you had a good trip home and now you understand why I said I filled it up with fuel for you Cassie@dbuchler.com wasn't sure of hot start/stops
Glad you have had some fun already and it's one hell of a beast you have bought
I really appreciated the fuel. At least I didn't have to sit in a fuel station waiting for it to cool down. Glad you have had some fun already and it's one hell of a beast you have bought
I will get it sorted asap as my plan is to use it every weekend with the kids so I really don't want to get stuck with them in the car.
The RAC tested the battery. It was 100% charged and 90% ok. I found a receipt for a new battery in May 2016. So providing it is the battery still in there.
But it is a pain simply when it's up to temp.
Who is cassie?
Thanks for the engine cover also. I was half way home and realised I had forgotten about it. Then opened the boot for the RAC and found it in the boot, so thanks very much.
I doubt it will be doing 31mpg as that would have been calibrated for the original injectors, and I'm not sure whether anyone would have bothered to recalibrate it.
Not that it matters when you having fun.
Now, if you stall it at traffic lights you can tell us how many times they change in 2 hours.

Yeah I was very surprised at the computer, but I didn't think about the recal. But yeah, who cares about it. You can't buy a car like that and care about mpg. Although I won't update the wife on this bit of news. Not that it matters when you having fun.

I have been really careful not to stall it. Now, that would really annoy me.
Luckily I've had cars before with such clutches so I'm ok - but still....
I nearly turned it off earlier as I was going down a hill in a really small country lane, about to pass some horses, so though I'd turn it off and roll down the hill past them in silence - I went for the key then suddenly thought...NOOOOO...

Cassie - should be "as" - my predictive text puts in email addresses !!

Slow crank when hot is normal. A new starter makes a big difference until it degrades again. You can wrap it and try and insulate things which might help, also try and keep under bonnet temps down.
Also as above injector calc in BCM/Dash will almost certainly be very wrong.
Even when I was supercharged, my 2" header tubes ran literally a few mm away from my starter. Never once has it been an issue. I've now a turbocharger down beside it....again never been an issue. Also as above injector calc in BCM/Dash will almost certainly be very wrong.
I've been using the same starter that came with my first LS engine, which is some 15 years old now.
So not sure whether some newer units are lesser quality, maybe wired different etc etc. But there really should never be a problem starting when hot. But you'd need to establish if it is down to wiring or the starter itself.

The Queen's Square meet is a bit of a clusterfk of recent with too many people and interest from the authorities. There are a couple of others in the South West forum, but I only very irregularly attend. I'll get it down to Bristol the next Sunday meet - second Sunday of each month from memory.
