Just had the car on a pit and the father in law (mechanic) reckons the UJ is shot, there is a clunk on power take up but I assumed this was the clunk everyone says is normal. Is this likely to be the source of said noise and is Monkfish the cheapest option parts wise?

Also the rubber gearbox mount looks shot/collapsed which may explain why the gearbox can be a little awkward at times.

Trip to MWP later in the week I think to get them checked and sorted if required, Mrs will be happy rolleyes

A general unscientific check....

A Monaro will always clunk. They have a fair amount of play in the drive line. If the gear box mount is past its best thant won't help....I would fix that first.

Check both the rubber donuts for wear and tear at the front and rear of the prop shaft. The actual prop shaft will have a large amount of rotational play in it compared with most cars.

Then grab hold of the two half shafts and check for any end play at the U/J's. You really only want a slight amount of play on these.

If all is well, change the diff oil and add friction modifier if required.

I forgot to mention, if your car has a Truetrac fitted there is no need to add friction modifier, and the half shafts at the diff end will have lots of play! Don't worry that's how the Truetrac is made.

Not sure on truetrac, i`ve seen nothing in the history to suggest it has. The driveshafts were replaced two years ago at Monkfish so should be fine having only done less than 12k

The mount is definitely gone it looks like its a blob and nothing like the pics of new ones on the Monkfish site, I'm hoping MWP will give the propshaft a clean bill of health as i`ve noticed no vibration in the drive and done two long distance high speed runs in it and lots of low speed town work too.

Fingers crossed

More than likely to be your prop shaft donut rather than the uj, mine used to clunk badly but replaced that and did the diff oil and all was good (until a few burn outs later when I blew up the diff!!!)

My 05 cv8 doesn't clunk. In fact I've yet to experience the dreaded clunk. Its 11 years old so I guess it'll never do it unless something wears out. If that happens I'd expect new parts to stop the clunk.

Am I just lucky? or do I need to abuse it more to cause the required amount of damage to make it clunk?

Bloody hell mine has clunked since I bought it 9 yrs ago! and then with only 6000 miles on the clock.
My car has had a pampered life since, and just turned 60,000 clunky miles.
I might look into changing both rubber donuts on the prop next year and see if that helps...pity they cost a fortune for what they are.

Trip to MWP revealed a little play in the rear propshaft joint but not too excessive for now which was a relief. The mount was still securing the box but had seen some sort of attempt at modification so we are looking at replacing it if the guy can source one from Gary 2nd hand as the Vauxhall price is excessive.

One the way home I hit some wood in the road from a farmers attempts at hedge cutting which dragged under the car on the nearside eventually freeing itself, EML came on virtually straight away at 60mph with no noticeable change in the engine or other symptons, despite a quick stop to switch on and off it remained lit.

Once home I tried my limited OBD2 reader but no codes showed up and the EML has now gone out again, I will wait for it to go stone cold later and try it again. I have read previously about the EML and its propensity to play silly buggers so I will try to shrug it off for now I just hope nothing got damaged by the half a tree left in the road by the idiot farmer.

I thought I had left neurotic car ownership behind with the RX8 smile

Right EML came on again, reader wont read the fault but live data shows fuel system 1 and 2 faulty, car runs fine and ticks over/accelerates fine too. Fuel level is in the red zone and the light is on, could it be picking up crap causing a fault? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Found the earth clamp on the battery is a proper bodge job and loose, the mangling of the clamp by someone means it cant be tightened and some bright spark put a small screw between the clamp and the battery I imagine to give it something to grip on.

Haven`t started it at all today and probably wont need to until next thurs when she is due at MWP for gearbox and diff oil change. Will get it on tech2 to see what is going on under the bonnet and get the battery clamp changed. To make myself feel better I gave it a good wash today smile

Lucky escape with the EML, the wood from the censored farmer had ripped out the O2 sensor plug but it only needed plugging back in with no apparent damage. Gearbox mount changed and new RP in diff and gearbox makes for a slightly smoother box (or is it my imagination) either way wont need to be done again so a few jobs ticked off the list
