Noticed oil pressure behaving oddly lately. It's not lost enough oil to move on the dip stick but pressure is lower than normal, dipping below 2 on the gauge on idle.

Had it's MOT 3 weeks ago, all clean, but yesterday I noticed a couple of drops of oil under the car after it had been left for a few hours after a drive.

It's yellow so I'm guessing it's not gearbox oil. Is that right? It looks like its dripping off the rubber exhaust mount between the cats and middle of underside. Not easy to tell without a ramp.

Anyone had the same issue or know what I'm looking at?

Thanks all

You say its yellow, nearest I can say is brake / clutch fluid. Have you checked these levels?

I hadn't thought of that. I'll check. I'm sure its engine oil though.

One thing I've noticed too, oil pressure drops when I first accelerate then builds slowly. Is that normal?

Could it be coming from the front of the gearbox? You might have a slave cylinder leak on the clutch. It can drop out of the bell housing and end up anywhere around that area.

I'm no mechanic but oil pressure and acceleration/rpm/oil temp go hand in hand.

When you start the car from cold the oil will be thicker so pressure should be greater, mine sits around 3 at idle. Under light acceleration this rises a bit to 3.5 or so. If you were to put your foot down the pressure would continue to rise (obviously though you shouldn't put your foot down before the car is at operating temp).

When up to temp the pressure at idle falls to about 2.5 and moves up to about 3 under hard acceleration, I've never seen mine much higher than this when warm.

If I've been stuck in traffic for a while I've seen the pressure at idle drop to about 2 but never any lower. Obviously as you first move off and engage the clutch the RPMs may drop slightly, this would pull your pressure down but should only be for a split second.

The gauge itself isn't exactly accurate though, it might even be faulty so best to get that checked if it's not behaving as you think it should.

I mean the pressure drops as I'm in gear and accelerate. Yesterday I was cruising along at 50 in 5th, pressure was sat at 2.5 on the gauge. As I give it more gas to get to 60, the pressure drops down to 2.

Then as I reach 60 and ease of the gas, the pressure goes back to 2.5 This doesn't seem right at all.

I suppose it couple be clutch fluid, levels seem ok, but we're only talking a few drops a day and I think I've noticed this quickly. Gonna get it booked in as I can't tell where it's coming from without a ramp.

A green fluid is aircon. Could it be that?

All other fluids levels haven't moved a millimetre. It's 100% engine oil though. Just can't see where it's coming from!

Can't get it on a ramp until Friday :-(

Gearbox oil is easy to identify by it's smell. It smells like the worst rotting decaying thing you can imagine hurl

Rear main seal perhaps?

What I can see on your engine is probably only an egg cup full, so would not show as a loss on the dipstick

Oil pressure sensor is at the back of the engine !!!

Didn't know where the sensor was.

I'm thinking either rear crank seal or leaking where the sensor taps in.

Looking at what I can, I'm guessing gear box has to be dropped out of the way? Great!

If you end up undressing the back of your engine, I have the SAC city cover alignment tools and am relatively local.

That's good to know, thank you!

We shall see Friday.

Well, I put a tray down Saturday morning after driving it Friday and nothing at all has dropped to the tray.

Hopefully this is a sign it's just a seal giving way under heat and pressure.

it's not overflow from expansion tank or aircon water picking up a bit of surface oil on its way to the ground ? or as you say maybe a one off caused by hot engine and hot day ?
