Hello,

I'm looking for a little advice regarding my gearbox (Tremec T56) in my Monaro VXR. There seems to be noise coming from it, not under casual/normal driving but when you sink the foot (it was a lovely sunny weekend and the country roads were calling  ). The noise is best described as the same noise you'd get if you were travelling at 20mph in 5th gear and put your foot down, you know that noise you get when you're in too high a gear. It's that sort of noise it's making but obviously...at speed and under load.

I remember reading that these gearboxes have issues with their input shafts (I cannot remember the details) and I also recall someone saying that Monkfish sekll repair kits/overhaul kits? Does anyone have any experience with these gearboxes at all? Mine is now coming up for an oil change plus I've still got my horrible LS2 stock clutch in there too.

the spigots are known to fail and some times caused by too much input shaft play or visa versa , you can either live with it depending on how much noise , the boxes are noisy any way so is it worse than standard noise , mine makes a noise it always has and it's not got worse , some times is it worth doing any thing or wait to see if it may possible go at some point , mines slightly noisy in idle and makes a bit of noise on acceleration sounds like a slight knock , as above it always did it is still fine , it was checked by mf and they said it was fine , made worse by no sound proofing , some times the gaitor by the gear stick tears and can make it sound worse , i put wet suit material there and it's quieter

If the gearbox is working OK, other than the odd noise,I would not worry too much about it. These gearboxes are noisy and rough sounding even when new.
I have just had the clutch replaced in my car as I was having trouble getting the gears. I thought the spigot bearing and/or slave cylinder were finished. However, I was very surprised to hear that both were in perfect health but the clutch itself was toast!.... and that's with less than 60000 gentle miles on the clock.
I went for the LS7,clutch,and new gearbox oil, and it's way better to drive than before.
The only way to be sure is to take the gearbox off and see what needs doing.
I'm sure Monkfish would test drive your car and give you some idea whats wrong.
The downside is if you leave things to long you might cause extra damage, so start saving!!!

Completely subjective but I've not heard any unusual noises from my VXR gearbox that you wouldn't hear from any other car. I wouldn't risk waiting for it to get worse in case a bearing detonates.

As previously mentioned, the spigot bearings fail and it'll take out the box with it so get it done. It's dirt cheap and as far as I'm aware the T56 isn't made anymore so you're fcensoredd if it goes. It'll probably still make a noise afterwards as they're noisy boxes anyway (as also previously mentioned) but like rocking horse scensoredt so not easy to find a replacement.

The points raised make a lot of sense. For the price of the bearing I'll just get it bought and whilst I'm in there get a new clutch and remote bleed line fitted, I may as well do it all at the same time, I'm taking her off the road for winter anyway so this would be a good opportunity. Is this the bearing I will need?

I would say that this noise is outside of "normal" as like most of you have said these gearboxes are noisy anyway although I think the bearing should be replaced as a matter of course as I don't know if it's ever been done.

Thats the one. Have a good look at the white gaiter under the leather one. They split over time. Surprising how much noise that lets in.

£50! I think I'll cut up some inner tube wink

Mine's not too bad, but has some holes and is a little sad.

As said, it's bloody hot and noisy when it's not there!

e: should probably add (following on from the shifter thread), that I think the direct sticks like the GMM are hard on the white gaitor, so a custom solution may be called for anyway.
