LS2 alternator
Discussion
Pretty sure my alternator has gone in the monaro and I took it off last week to get it changed over.
MF have them for £470 iirc but says that's with the clutch, what is this? Have it cheaper without the clutch.
I'd rather not pay that much and with the part number my local store can get it for £260. They are cheaper from the states but with postage and import charges probably work out the same.
Ideally I want to get my current one reconditioned but not sure if they'll fix the whole thing and not just the bushes. What have you guys done to sort yours? Any help appreciated.

Take your alternator to a local repair shop, they will be able to fix it for a fraction of the cost.MF have them for £470 iirc but says that's with the clutch, what is this? Have it cheaper without the clutch.

And a lot of modern cars have a clutched pulley on the alternator, which is just another piece of sh** to go wrong and cost owners money for no good reason.
I'll take it to the local place on Saturday to see what they say and exactly what they fix with it. Is the clutch that extra part with a pulley on? Do they break?
Basically the problem with my car is the battery voltage kept going down to 12 and then back to normal and as the days went on it would get more often and slower to start the car. The battery light often came on and so did the check alternator error. Hopefully by changing it it's going to fix the problem.

Anything in the UK is always much much higher...and of course even in the US it varies.Part no 92211821

If no immediate hurry, I've found egay's global shipping program to be very cost effective. Sometimes stuff takes a little over a week, sometimes up to about 3 weeks. Really not bad at all.

Yep ebay shipping works well. Only thing is it always goes to some really odd company when it lands in the UK
As long as it arrives at my door cheaply and reliably..I dont care. And so far that has happened. And IMO better service than those s UPS an for a fraction of the price !!The clutch is controlled by the BCM. You are right in that the design is just one more piece of **** to break.
So I have always wondered if a non-clutch alternator would work. Over here, the 5.7 litre 2004 GTO has an ordinary pulley, and the 6.0 litre 2005/2006 has this added complexity.

I would highly doubt the clutch is computer controlled, as they're purely a mechanical thing. But yes, they're a waste of time.
Charging can be controlled to a degree by the ecu, but that's down to the regulator etc within the alternator, not the mechanical parts.
The wiring connector on older cars is different so chances are the unit from one would not work easily on a newer car. But there is no reason why a solid pulley alternator wouldnt work.
There's no doubt someone makes a suitable alternator with a normal pulley. Although unless the clutched pulley has actually given any trouble, probably not a lot of reason to worry.

other pulley next to what ?
It is difficult sometimes for them to test, as they've no way of spinning an alternator to the speeds needed.
Local place has a small motor, but it is very slow compared to how it would be on the car. IMO if it is intermittent and they cant find anything and refuse to replace the regulator etc...just buy a replacement.
No sense risking getting stranded somewhere.

On the 6.0 there's something else attached, think it's called an idler.
I say intimittent but isn't really driveable at all so something needs to be fixed. I did fit a new battery because it was buggered but haven't driven the car since, the voltage was still showing low.
When I pick the alternator up I'll see what they checked because I think it needs replacing

By low what do you mean below 12v also was the new battery fully charged when you brought it.
Not sure if it was fully charged because I haven't driven it seen as it's not currently taxed. I left it running and was showing the normal voltage and then dropped down to 12 and a few minutes later jumped back up. That's what it was doing in the last few weeks when I was driving it and was getting more frequent and lower and really struggling to get the power to start so I presumed from that that the alternator had packed in. Oh and the battery light would come on and check alternator.
Ideally I would give it a long drive to see if the battery was the problem but I need to swap my insurance over and tax it to test that so could do with fixing it first.

On any of the pictures there is nothing attached, other than the integral clutch on the pulley.I say intimittent but isn't really driveable at all so something needs to be fixed. I did fit a new battery because it was buggered but haven't driven the car since, the voltage was still showing low.

I might just be on about the clamp thing that came off with it, can't remember now if there was a pulley on, haven't looked at it for a week so my memory must be going lol.
Anyway update, went to collect and been told the pulley on the alternator is slipping and is cracked inside. MF doesn't sell this part separate, anybody know where I can get one from?
