Is the criteria for hard brake lines that any sign of corrosion is a MOT failure? mine have signs of surface rust, I want to get them replaced for peace of mind, but could do with getting past the MOT in the very short term

Depends how bad they are.light surface rust is fine.
Best to clean up with wire wool or sandpaper and either grease or paint.

My rears burst on the MOT ramp! Which was just as well.

They'll probably be worst where the MOT man can't see.

Mine got through 2x MOTs with fairly obvious surface rust without a fail or advisory before I had them replaced.

Scrape the loose rust off, if there is any black pitting , replace

If unsure - replace
