Monaro alternator
Discussion
Hi, for the past week my battery gauge has been dropping down to 12 whilst driving and then going back up to normal. Has been doing it every few minutes really. The check alternator sign has been flashing with the battery symbol but then goes off within the minute.
Obviously something is wrong but before I have time to check, does this sound like just a loose connection or can an alternator act like this if it was faulty?
Also if I do need a new one is there anywhere cheaper than monkfish or can you not fit other models to the monaro?
Thanks, Lee.

Yes, I have got one from Mill Autoquip, it was £270ish plus the vat.
Best thing to do is remove the alternator and have it checked out, also check your earth at the same time.
Mine did this until it fully gave up 10 minutes later
I presume that quote is for a complete brand new unit ?Best thing to do is remove the alternator and have it checked out, also check your earth at the same time.

Unlikely to be an earthing fault as the earth is common to the engine block which would show other faults, namely slow turnover (even with a fully charged battery) , odd behaviour of other engine related warning lights - namely oil pressure- anything which shares the common engine earth, if you're main positive supply is OK it's 99% positive it's the alternator at fault.
Far better off with a replacement unit theses days, we stopped reconditioning ourselves about 10 years ago.
