Topside looks very nice. No mention of under-sealing, so I'd want to see the entire underside when it's lifted by a four-poster. Sills with the skirts off, wheel arches with liners removed, strut tops, brake and fuel lines, fuel tank straps, chassis rails and associated box sections, entire front with bumper off.

Good price if it's as nice as the pictures suggest. And I do like that blue smile

On the topic of old GTSs, #16 will be off to its new owner in the next week or so. Will become a 'special' project, so I'm glad to see it will live on...

Yup all big issues!

I need to start working through a couple I have left.

Although fuel straps is an easy fix.

What are you gonna do, go round his house and start stripping his car on his driveway? If you asked me to do this,id tell you to walk.
57000 miles, clearly its not been used every winter, and it says its been garaged.

I think Arnie's is a once bitten view, which is understandable.

5700 "recorded" miles is enough over 16 years for plenty of rot. I'll tell you about an Alfa I owned once smile

Hi Fred,

You make a good point and I could imagine being told by the owner to take a hike. Trouble is that these cars rot at an alarming rate with little provocation. My one had just 70K on the clock and was an utter basket case. I paid £3K for mine and it still wasn't worth saving. It would be a shame to spend the thick end of £10K on something that gets scrapped come the next MOT. I'd say if the owner isn't confident enough to help out a serious buyer, you're better off looking elsewhere (at least Monaros were galvanised).

Assuming you're just checking it on the driveway...
(1) Ask to take the front bumper off. It's a handful of screws (bit of WD40 for the two underneath). The state of the front end behind the bumper will tell you a lot about the rest of the car.
(2) Jack the car up using the OEM jack on the recommended jacking points. Any creaking or partial collapse will tell you a lot about the sills.
(3) Once it's up in the air, get some axle stands under it...
(4) Have a good look at the top of the rear inner rear wheels arches (you can get a few clues to this just opening the rear doors, as they rot through here)
(5) Have a look at the state of the turned in edges of the wheel arches, as stones knock through the paint here, starting the corrosion process.
(6) Use a torch to look at the strut top from the inside
(7) Do what you can to examine the sills with the stupid skirts in place. They rot from the rear, by the bungs. You may notice bubbling on the sill outer. This will have come from the inside. Also check the spot weld line (front to back) between the floor and the sill.
(8) MUST MUST MUST Check out the state of the chassis rails, especially where they run down the bulkhead and under the driver passenger foot-wells. These can turn to cornflakes, regardless of how nice and shiny the rest of the car is. This represents a major structural failure and isn't cheap to fix.
(9) Have a good look at the brake pipes and fuel line, especially on the long run under the car. These pipes were not specified to resist salt. IIRC Monkfish will charge £700 to change the rear brake pipes, as the sub-frame has to come off.

Definitely time to buy with the head, not the heart.

I agree its a few quid, but its on the money for a nice one + cost of the charger. I think its priced as such coz he knows the condition is good.

I didn't even look under mine when viewing and it was pissing rain. I haven't found any horrendous rust as yet, and I'm not going to be stripping bits off looking for it either. Mine is No 26 incidentally.

Maybe be is not tip top. It has rot. The rails I had to repair by the bulkhead and the front behind the bumper will need some work. The rest is light surface rust that I need to clean up. But it's not great to find this down the line. I did however pay a fair price with some know issues.

Ps. Mine looks tidy from the outside. And without digging too deep.
