Hello everyone,

So the Monaro went in for her MOT and she passed, only advisory was that the front brake discs are going to need changed soon. However I was advised that whilst the car was under general inspection they found something odd near the bell housing of the gearbox, passanger side at the top. A bolt was missing and the part that the bolt would thread into was also missing, I got shown this photo they took. I've never seen anything like this and I'm a touch confused as to what's happened. Has anyone seen this before or any idea what's happened?

The photo is poor, but it just looks like a gearbox to bellhousing bolt is missing.

Not the end of the world if all others are installed and tight...but it does beg the question why it is missing.

From the marks, it was clearly fitted at some stage, but looks like it could have been some time ago.

That's the odd thing though, the tester said even if you had a bolt there is physically nothing behind it to bolt it into.

Is there also what looks like clean aluminium where the lower arrow is indicating ? If so, bolt may have been threaded into something that sat behind the lug where the top arrow shows clean aluminium, hope that makes sense scratchchin

Yea, can see what you mean in the photo.

Mine's an older T56 setup and different than that. Cant seem to find many images where you can make it out though for later stuff.

There are more holes than bolts on the bellhousing. I was confused by this first time I took one off. I thought I was missing a bolt when I cam to reinstall so got another bolt sent up and spent 30 mins trying to thread it into a non existent hole. One of the uppermost ones.

You sure thats the bellhousing?

I had a look as best I could at some LS2 engines with the T56 gearboxes and found this, I have highlighted the area I believe this missing bolt lives.

Ah, gearbox end, not block end, which is what I thought you were talking about.

It's defo the area as shown, you can see by the clutch line.

Exactly which box/engine do you have ?

As long as all other bolts are there I wouldnt worry though. I know I left one of my top bolts out simply because access was a nightmare.

It's hard to descide it somethings actually broken or soething neets tightened up. If there is something broken it'll be the bell housing for the gearbox from what I've seen.

I've found a pic of a bellhousing and it looks like there should be a boss there for a bolt to go into

Ok so from that I can see that it's probable that the bellhousing has been broken maybe during work that's been done in the past.

Sounds possible, but it doesnt look like a broke surface in that pic ? Hard to tell if it's dirty though

Does anyone know where I can buy a new or second hand bell housing from?

It's possible, I'll be inspecting it closer this weekend. This is something that the car has had for a while now and I assume it was maybe the previous owner.
