I noticed a sticker on a BMW with a security message. I think I can guess the reason.
Is it only BMW's that have that vulnerability to theft via the OBD port?

Keyless entry is the worse , Range Rover bmw merc Audi are main thefts , cover your vin number on dash makes it more difficult , pm if you want to know why , every car I have has other security on it

Are you allowed to cover the visible VIN on your car? I have seen it being frowned upon, by UK police.

Don't know, but I was tempted to drive away while you still held onto the key to see how far I could get. smile

Not a regular in these parts, but...

OBD ports are always live (by EU regs), so people break in, plug in a device and program a new key and then drive off.

Affects pretty much anything from keyless go. Several insurers in London are refusing to cover for theft of Rangies if they don't have a Disklok. One guy in our office has had 2 Golf Rs taken.

You could see if there is a fuse just for the OBD port, my ST has a separate fuse (No19) that a lot of people just remove until needed

True, but there is no real visual deterrent

They ll still have the doors off

Most remove feed to Obd , they just plug & program

Put a disclock on - Tight fitting

Disklok is supposed to be loose, so that it can't be used to break the steering lock

I used to work for the well known yellow breakdown service. I was on recovery and we had to relay a lady home to Yorkshire from Surrey in her Mondrian after she had dropped her keyless entry fob in her drive way when visiting her daughter. So you can make it quite along way if you don't switch the engine off.

If its to loose & the steering wheel spokes are at the lower end of the wheel you can grab the top and bend the wheel oval & pull it straight off

I have saw a few I have recovered

More the ease of pairing a new key to the car on the driveway.

Cover the vin , better to still have a car than have it stolen , there are other vins to look at on the car , plus the bit of card over it should be easy enough to remove , the lock over the obd is a good idea , the only downside is damage is done by them breaking in , as above worse hit are Audi merc bmw and Range Rover
