In my 6ltr VXR I once got an overall avg of 28mpg at 60-65mph on the journey from Winchester to Newbury on the A34 circa 40 miles or so. I was driving like miss daisy to see what I could get, even took a pic of the reading. Having said that in the Bathurst I have got the same journey down to 18 mpg, mind you it was a little bit more spirited journey!
Power requirement io overcome aerodynamic drag increases with speed cubed. So to run at double the speed for any car = 2 cubed (ie 8x) the power requirement.
The VXR8 will take 6th at around 40mph. It'd have have to be 8x less efficient at this speed to deliver less mpg than it would at 80mph. So whilst the big engine and high gearing make higher cruising speeds relatively fuel efficient, you'll always save fuel by slowing down.
But who can be 4rsed with that crap?

Must be because I have a supercharger that I get lower mpg then? I have sat at 60mph and managed 21.3 and sat at 70mph and get 20-20.8mpg. It costs £20 for me to do 34 miles which is my daily route
The fuelling map and exact mods may affect this too. If it's running a tad rich, then you might be burning excess fuel.As for mpg, I have a 5.7 LS1 in a Camaro, but generally similar to the Monaro's. Although the Camaro is a bit sleeker and a bit lighter.
Over the years of ownership I've found it returns it's best mpg going a bit quicker. If I sit with the cruise at 60mph, it'll return less mpg than sitting at 80mph on cruise control GPS speeds, not indicated).
Best mpg I've clocked it at was just over 31mpg. Normal use is more like 22-24mpg.
