Hi all

I figure my mess will probably help someone googling monaro brakes.

In order to do the bare minimum to get my 6.0 VXR, needing brake work among other things, through its MOT so it's not a sitting duck while I do more serious work on it, I foolishly went an ordered a set of discs pads for an 05-06 Pontiac GTO. The fact that a full set of discs and pads was only $200 was largely the motivation here wink

This was on the assumption that it was basically the same as a 6.0 VXR but life is never that simple.

It was a bit of a spur of the moment thing but further research shows that the 6.0 and 5.7 VXR went up to 330mm front / 315mm rear discs and the GTO retained the later 05/06 CV8 brakes, being 320mm front / 285mm rear (or 286mm depending on the source!)

HOWEVER, as it happens, I also have a full set of calipers from an 05/06 GTO. I don't know if these are different from the Monaro VXR calipers in terms of geometry, perhaps the difference is just down to the pads, but can I cobble together a working brake system from what I have here? I don't mind running yank brakes for a bit, I am eventually going to get some decent brakes most likely in the form of APs so I just need to get the thing stopping!

The new front dics you bought should be 320mm not 330mm if they are for a 05/06 GTO? If they are 296mm then it is a different story and a new plan will be needed!
If they are 320mm then the pads and discs should work with your GTO 05/06 calipers you have on the shelf.
The back pads are all the same no matter if they are the VXR, GTO or normal Monaro but the discs are different depending on which caliper you use.
First move maybe to see what you have actually bought. The size of the new Front and Back discs and whether the back discs are vented or not.
Sometimes they are cheap because they are the normal stock Monaro/Commodore brakes which are easy to get hold of.

Thanks for the reply

The fronts that are coming are indeed 320mm (according to the seller) and not the earlier smaller spec so in theory should work - the rear discs coming are 285mm so looks I'll be using the GTO calipers on the rear too

They're in transit, it will be interesting to see how it all turns out when they arrive. They're only a stop gap so I'll be pleased if I end up with working brakes! wink

I've read in a few places that the 320 / 285 setup isn't much worse than the 330mm / 315mm setup so no huge loss either.
