What engine oil

Choosing engine oil is always an interesting topic.
I took some opinions and was persuaded that 5W-40 was the best choice for my supercharged LS1. I was advised against 50 as this might reduce flow.
Please note I don't pretend to be an expert in this matter
Indeed, bobistheoilguy.com is a good resource and the closest you'll get to consensus. I took some opinions and was persuaded that 5W-40 was the best choice for my supercharged LS1. I was advised against 50 as this might reduce flow.

Was just wondering if a thicker oil like a 40 or even 50 would be beneficial to a higher miles engine
As a non-expert in the field; I would say that (based on my 80k miles in a VXR8 daily drive) most of the time the engine has a low level of stress. 2000 rpm at light load only a small amount of time at higher revs and / or under load. In my case I almost certainly never load or rev the engine until the water and the oil is hot.So 80k miles or 130k miles for you may not represent much engine wear - just run-in :-)

For what it's worth, the Vauxhall manual says
Engine oils
For engine lubrication, we recommend in
particular Vauxhall brand oils
ACEA A3/B3: SAE 10W-40:
– or –
ACEA A3/B3: SAE 5W-40:
for petrol engines
I presume there must be a reason they write this where the oil cap itself says 10w30 (which you can't seem to get in the UK easily).
