I take it you are not looking for a power source and there for not connecting to boot battery , if you are running some thing from engine bay eg day light running lights , normally I've found on other cars there are rubber grommets on drivers side near foot well of most cars and normally one is redundant or its drill it time or see if there is enough room to squeeze an extra cable where loom goes in , just grommet and seal where you go through don't want wet feet , I have found if you want to wire some thing I have created a totally seperate loom for any work due to how the car is wired up , my tracker and cut outs are all seperate to the main look

Rubber boot embracing the steering column where it passes through the bulkhead. It is large enough to take a few cables through, and is multilayered, so kind of seals itself. Just be sure to clip the cables away from steering column.

I know........I should drill a new hole, grommet etc but I know it will
end badly when I rip into a loom/pipe/something else important. I can
probably get away with just one cable which has a phono jack on the end which
will have to pull through. I will look for blank grommet, then the steering
column gaitor ect....last resort new hole.

Who would run cables through a column grommet , a steering component that turns & your poking wires through within mm"s of a rotating steering component cable tied or not

Factory grommets I would only use if they have a male sticking out for an accessory , so you snip the end & feed through

More like within centimetres. With the steering column being a rotating element, it is not like the cable is going to block the column from rotating.

Plenty of manufacturers run them through the column grommet for safety & neatness :-0

We are not talking about plenty of manufacturers, but end users who have reasons to run cables through the bulkhead that plenty of manufacturers have not considered plenty of end users would ever need...

I was equally being sarcastic, but yeah crack on, and send me a drawing.

Your theory about a car crash is far fetched. One could say buying used car parts is dangerous, and selling them should be illegal, or modifying cars is not to be done, because during a car crash the non-standard parts might become a source of failure, they might even catch fire!

Alll of the above is done by people every day. Moreover, some do it for living, don't they.

Why is a car crash far fetched ? I take it crashes don"t happen or columns collapse either. What has running cables in a safe & acceptable way got to do with second hand parts ?
Re: Modified cars you would not believe what you see , someone suggested once running cables through a steering column grommet and cable tying them out the way so they will not rub on the column as it rotates or it should be ok if you just drive straight , yee ha he then rode off on a horse !

Ps if you drive an old stter Vf Gts like me you may wanna check the wiring from the positive jump point on the n/s flitch that runs down past the n/s/r steering rack bolt as it rubs against it & the rack body further along & can rub through & that could catch fire or is that far fetched to !!!

Anyway you enjoy your Saturday night as I have better things to do than debate on this , see you at B & Q tmo for some self tappers , No Nails & sticky tape

I did actually run a lc1 wb cable through the passenger floor, but now switching to PLX duel wb,boost and fuel
pressure, all have their own little controllers which connect together,if I mount all the controllers in the engine
bay I only need 1 cable to drive the gauges and 1 for the 5v from wb for data logging.....or mount the controllers
inside. I'll weld the wb bosses in on friday (see, now I'm committed smile ) We can lay everything out on the bench sat
check out cable lengths and go from there...........assuming your car leaves us any time biggrin

Depending how the engine loom goes through and how big the cables are we should be fine. I managed a few in the vt and it looks stock.

Till I see it I won't know.
