Hi all,

I'll try to keep this fairly short! I've wanted a Monaro for years, in a position now to be able to run one. See a very well-sorted one in the classifieds at the moment, run an insurance quote and... nearly 4k eek

I'm 23 y/o. 6 years NCB on one policy and 4 on another. The car would be kept either in a garage or a driveway. Live in what I thought was a semi-reasonable postcode (RM6). Mother on policy as a named driver which bumped it down a chunk (it was over 4k initially). Negligible difference between parked on driveway/garage.

What insurers do younger drivers on here use please?! I've had Greenlight suggested to me so I'll give them a go, any others? I'm annoyed to say the least, I had thought that this was a problem of my past! frown

Thanks in advance.

Keep with more specialist companies is the general rule.

Brentacre, Sky, Need to insure etc. Sometimes modified policies can be cheaper than regular policies as well. I have yet to get a quote on a comparison website that is even semi realistic. Cheapest one I got was still £1,400 and I pay literally 1/2 that.

Manchester postcode is the killer for myself.

your age is probably the main killer. also if you have no experience of insurance on performance / RWD cars that will also be a big negative.

better to speak to a specialist insurer in person and not rely on online quotes

Admiral have always been the cheapest for me, even when I was 25.

I think my first year was about £1200, now it's £450.

As suggested above try the specialists.

Sky insurance were about 720 for me when I first got a monaro VXR at 24, so you should be able to get a reasonable quote off them.

What concerns me is that this was always the case for me, too! When I had my 156 GTA Admiral were almost half the price of the cheapest specialist quote I got.

I've had mine since 21 and have used Admiral the entire time as the specialists like A-Plan and Sky haven't been able to get near on premium. Paying up front it was about 1.1k to start with, dropped to around 870 by 23/4 with a small voluntary excess. Worth going with them for a couple of years I'd say - bit more to spend on the car itself! smile

I went monthly at my last renewal so trying the specialists in a few months now I'm 25!

Just get quotes from as many insurers as you can. You need to appreciate that different insurers are forced to harden prices based on recent losses. Prices soften when they haven't been hit recently. Back in the day, when you couldn't insure a Sapphire Cosworth for love nor money, I found a company that would cover me for £400 TPFT. More recently, my daughter's boyfriend (19) had a quote on a CV8 Monaro that was cheaper than what he'd just paid to insure a BMW 320d coupe. These companies simply needed to find a good use for the reserves to hand.

I got mine age 25 with 3 years NCB. went with Admiral who wanted around £700. No one else mainstream would give me an offer below 4 figures.

Admiral oddly really didn't like me adding the misses onto the insurance.

They wanted an extra £900 for her. Keep in mind she is 34 and has years of NCB herself. They also wanted the entire premium up front in one lump sum with her on it. No idea why. Myself on my own.... £800.

I haggled with sky and brentacre and got it down cheaper, as well as better cover for the modifications. Plus my current policy, I am literally allowed to do what they hell I like to the car. Nothing extra to pay, not even admin charges for adding anything.

So get quotes from everyone you can, then start playing the lowest quoted companies off against each other. An be cheeky, even when I got the absolute cheapest quote I could I still asked for another £50 off and got it. They can have some adjustment in the prices.

Admiral were great for me when I got mine (was 24 at the time).

Mine has always been for social use only which I think helped maybe? Have you got another car you could multi car with? When we got the Alfa, that on its own was ~ £800, but adding it to a multi car with the Monaro and an old Clio, it only cost an extra £100 or so!
