Quick question, but does anyone know if it is possible to change the stupid sunglasses holder and flap that always breaks in Monaro for one of these (open cup holder - image stolen from Google images of VZ SS Ute)? And if so, where might be best to source one?

Sorry, I can't help but interested in this potential mod as agree the original item is not very usable (apart from hiding my snickers from the kids lol!)

Yes, the flap thing can be removed...you might want to search ebay for Pontiac gto cup holder, I think that's where I've seen it before....

Looks like an expensive bit of rubber (mostly postage to be fair): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-2006-Pontiac-GTO-Co...

The flap on mine is taped down as the catch is broken, but I guess I need to have a better look myself, but does the lid'd insert lift leaving an empty box? I'm thinking there is more to it than that. I think from memory when I looked before, there were numerous little tabs/catches to prise open and out the way and didn't want to attempt it before having a solution in case the brittle plastic literally left me with a somewhat sorry looking mess.

The lid thing has its own container, which is secured to the console trim by two screws from underneath. I'm not sure if that bit of rubber is a direct swap in for that whole subassembly.

Ok, thanks chaps. Will be dark in evenings, but I'll have a look on Saturday, see how it goes.

If you've not done it before, then to remove the console trim:

  • find the rubber cubby down and infront of the gearstick - remove it and a screw just above it (the screw is offset to the right, underneath the flip-down thing under the stereo)
  • open centre console lid (big leather one) and lever up the trim slowly from inside the console box, disconnecting the window switches and fog light/TC buttons as they become reachable
  • keep pulling up the trim. The trim extends around the gear stick and includes the little cubby thing from the first step
Don't think I've forgotten anything, but I'm sure there's a guide with photos somewhere.
