Over the Christmas period my Monaro VXR developed a problem whilst running. If I sit in traffic I get the EML and the engine starts running really rough and there is also a strong smell of fuel. The problem however is intermittent and it's seems to appear more so when I am sat in traffic than actually moving.

I had my car decatted but hadn't put the spacers on the post cat O2 sensors, assuming this was the problem I installed them between Xmas and New year however the problem has come back. None of my OBDII tools report any fault code and no stored codes either, there will be something going on but nothing a £20 ebay fault reader can detect I'd imagine.

Has anyone experienced this sort of problem before? I've booked it into the garage tomorrow for some diagnostic work. It's frustrating not being able to pull out fault codes it gives me no frame of reference to actually fix her >frown

Didn't get an EML, but last year, kept smelling fuel with a slightly rough idle, but normally could only smell it when driving for a while, it would sort of permeate the cabin, then when parking up, would smell for a bit, had it checked twice, once at Monkfish when it was in for a diff, and also locally at Holden Racing and it was never 100% found what it was for sure and seemed to sort itself out and never come back since (done around 3000 miles since), but the inspections suggested one of the injectors may have been weeping slightly but then re-sealed itself.

I've taken her to the garage today. They've had her for a couple of hourse and can't get the EML to come on, nor can they find any fault codes.
Uh....what now? lol

I had this exact problem a few years ago with mine, intermittent and only when in traffic. When it's doing it and you cycle through the dash views for instant fuel consumption, is it off the scale? Mine was idling around 1.7 gal/hour. Suspicious I used an ODB reader and found the pre cat lambdas weren't behaving properly. I replaced them both and the issue went away.

If it's been decatted, dont you need the O2 settings changed or completly removed from your tune?

You could try removing the spacers and pack as much wire wool in as possible to help.

I had to fit spacers to my sensors but I still had 200 cell cats fitted.

When the problems comes around and the engine starts shaking the way it does there is a huge smell of fuel. Like she's overfuelling.

I thought getting them mapped out was optional it's either mapped out or install spacers?

I called the garage for an update and no matter what they do they can't get the EML to come on or the car to demonstrate the same behavior. They said that in their opinion by what I've described it sounds like the engine is dropping a cylinder which could be coils, wiring, plugs, leads whatever and I'd be inclined to agree however.

Plugs: Replaced 3 months ago with AC Delco plugs from Monkfish
Leads: Replaced 3 months ago with Magnecore Leads from Monkfish
Coils: Replaced 1 month ago with MSD coils from VPW Australia.

For the cost of an EFI live license (£80?) just get them switched off! Find someone local and friendly with a flashscan.

Hi. Having the same problem with my Ro at the moment. Funnily enough it start at Xmas. It was in the garage last week and it was said to be an 02 sensor, which was replaced. It started and ran fine when I collected it Wednesday evening but Thursday morning it was doing the same again. It's back in the garage tomorrow, so fingers crossed. I'll report back when I hear from the garage. Oh, I'm also getting a smell of petrol, the rumbling and noticeably worse fuel consumption. I'll let you know how I get on. Gutted because my Ro is my daily driver.
