Hi all, after first suspecting a dodgy battery it looks like my starter is goosed. Just a click but not turning over. Randomly I jump started it twice at the weekend when it wouldn't start and both times it fired up. I've charged but battery up fully and also tried a new battery at it wouldn't turn over. Anyway has anyone DIY'd this before. I'm handy with the spanners but like to check out before getting dirty. I can't find any info on possible pitfalls. Some Aussie forums talk about dropping steering and engine subframes !!! Hoping it's not that involved. If anyone can shed any light I'd appreciate it. Cheers.

Did you mean you randomly bump started it? because if you jump started it off another battery and it started then the starter is ok ?

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I jumped it from another car on Sunday and it started. I've since tried a new battery and it started once and it's now not starting. I've tried rocking the car in gear to rotate the starter round a bit and it's still not engaging. I'm guessing it was just a fluke that it previously started.

unbolting the starter takes 2 minutes getting it out the hole is much more difficult
Disconnect the steering column & remove the engine mount & bracket works for me

Hi,what exhaust have you got,i have got a Full Wortec system,i had to remove driver's side manifold and split exhaust under car,i did not touch steering column or engine mount,be prepared to do some wiggling to get it out and the new one in,i Purchased a GM spec starter motor from Monkfish witch is a Mitsubishi starter,i tried the Battery first and had intermittant starting, changed starter and had no prob's since,i would not advise fitting a cheap replacement as its a work-up to change the starter

regards Pete

Sounds like starter, if you get a new starter motor and bump start the car you could drive to Neil's and get him to do it, he's only near Rochester, think he has an account with MF so he could order it

Hi Pete, exhaust is all stock (except rear silencer) so hopefully that will not add to the complexity. We'll see. Cheers.

Thanks, I think I've got enough info to take a look. Doesn't sound beyond me but I'll keep you updated. 😀

Will do Steve. Thanks for the reminder. Standard stuff when playing with electrics but I must confess to swapping out a complete Vectra C interior on my GSi to full heated leather and didn't disconnect. I was so lucky not to give myself a bag of trouble with airbag issues as forgot they put them in the seats as well !!!

Hope you get it sorted, with a bit of luck it may be a bad connection on the starter motor solenoid, it may have enough current to chuck in the starter dog but then not enough contact to pass the current to spin the starter
