If you're talking about RV3 and the likes, these cars are epic, but effectively run in a different class of 'street legal'. i.e. a car that can be driven on the road, but sets records when it wouldn't necessarily be allowed to drive on the road.
Maybe it's time for a street legal top fuel dragster...
And I think that the Audi and RV2 (and the likes) were the last of the fast Street Eliminators to run on petrol. The current crop of cars all run non-pump ethanol, while people like Larry Larson strip their cars down and rebuild them to run on methanol prior to putting them on the strip.
Closest you get to genuine street racing in the UK is the Annual Street Racer event at York Raceway. The older format of this race really sorted out which cars were fastest.
