Monaro LS2.

If the gearbox was on its way out would it manifest as a ticking noise?

When under the car there is a ticking noise coming from what seems to be where the gearbox meets the engine, you can here it up above but not as bad, could this be the gearbox? Nothing else seems wrong with the gearbox just a bit concerned as i heard this noise when it was being MOT's and now am hypersensitive to it.

I remember a few years ago some who didn't know the cars said it sounded like it was ticking and i think MF said that was usual of the coil packs or lifters? Not sure if its just that im hearing and why it would be heard more underneath the car.

You can hear it in the background of this video which was taken because of the belt squeak, have yet to get an audio from under the car.

As always thanks in advance.

Doesnt sound anything gearboxy. Almost sounds like an HT lead arcing out

Put the car in gear, foot on the clutch and car stood still.. That will ensure everything in the gearbox is stationary, so you can rule it out from making any noises.

Potentially not gearbox then.

Here is a better vid with drivers door open, you can hear it increases when pressing the gas peddle

There is the pulley squeal - beyond that any "ticking" is usually exhaust blowing, or injectors being noisy. I don't hear either though (second vid doesn't work)

But it sounds like a mechanical ticking like tapets, as in second vid, exhaust was checked when it was up on the ramps, it's not a blowing noise.

If an exhaust is leaking it sounds like tappets , I covered my exhaust with a bit of exhaust wrap , I thought it was a head problem , the leak was in a flexi section but was not visible or obvious , once I covered it I found the non visible leak on it , I would put a leather glove on run the exhaust and cover any joints etc with the gloves on a see if it changes the noise , I take it you are getting no other issues ? Hope that makes sense

No other issues just the ticking noise, hadn't thought about exhaust as it's only about 2 yrs old, worth checking I guess
