Hey there Sean, well about to bring my Commodore VX II into the country, arrives in Felixstowe on the 3 Feb, so will keep you posted on what I needed to do to get it compliant. From what I have figured out, the ute is considered commercial, so you don't have to worry about getting your speedo converted to MPH. Problem #1 out of the road. Only thing that I believe you need to do is fit a rear fog light.
£1200 is a fair bit for roll on roll off. I was going to go down that track initially, but the wait time to get it shipped out of Japan was going to be about 3 months. The best price I got was about £600. Give Tony from Seaway a ring, + 61 7 3839 3373 he might be able to get you a good price on RO-RO. Only thing is that you have to sort out your own customs and insurance on this end. In the end I went for the container option, and he would be able to help you out there as well.
I made a mistake and didn't go with him, as I had to get my car from Mackay to Brisbane. I originally got quoted a slightly cheaper price (£100 cheaper DOH!) for a shared 40ft container with a removalist, and they looked after everything (container, packing, customs, picking container up from terminal). Was told originally that they didn't have enough stuff to put it in a 40ft container, but instead they would put my car and some stuff in a 20ft container instead and send it for the same price. Once they had the car, of course their story changed. They would wait for the 40ft container to fill up, OR, if I paid more, they would send it in a 20ft container. Tried to pull out of the deal, but they at this stage already had the car, and were going to charge for storage and an admin fee. Wasn't very impressed, especially after the fact that the car was already there, and they changed their tune. Anyhow, once I get the car, there won't be some nice words said, that is for sure. The cost in the end was £1300 with insurance! OUCH.
Anyhow good luck. Will keep you posted on anything else I find that needs doing.

Sorry Fella's, got this email from Holden, and well looks like you might have to ship your cars back. Would have thought that Holden would have been helpful, was just chasing ways to modify the speedo to read MPH instead of KPH, but actually in the end, think that I will just make up a sticker to put on there.
Dear Jason,
Thank you for your email.
Please be advised that as Holden does not recommend either modifications or
that you export your vehicle, we cannot offer any advice on this topic.
We understand that the Monaro is exported both to the UK and the US,
however, they are built to foreign specifications and not modified
afterwards. We hope this clarifies Holden's position on the matter.
Kind regards,

What is everyone else's experience with the SVA?
As far as I can figure out, all that needs to be done is a rear fog light, and MPH registered on the Speedo. Strange though that the comerical vehicles only have to have KPH.
Anyhow, hopefully will catch up with you guys at the Ace Cafe.

There is no need to ship your car back!!!!
It can be made to comply.
If, as i understand it, you are both aussie nationals, and have owned the car for at least 6 months, then you can import it as a "personal import". As i understand it this means you only have to do SVA 1 (simple SVA) as opposed to SVA 2.
This is the same test that my VY ss Ute has to pass. The only mods were fog light and speedo conversion.
These are no different to the thousands of jap imports that come in every year.
Mine had an electronic convertor fitted to change the speedo, but i understand that it can be done by changing parameters on the system of the car. Likewise the display can then also be corrected to read miles not km. The km reading on the dsplay is actually miles beacause the added electronic convertor simply lies to the car about the distance covered, but the display doesn't know this. Does that make sense?
None of this is a mystery. It is all clearly explained on the various government websites, the DVLA one being a good starting point. They are there for your benefit - USE them!
Check my comments re "personal imports" on the websites, i could be wrong - but i don't think so.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Roger.. Yeah, read all the stuff I can on the subject, and that is all I came up with as well. Just hoping that is all that I have to do. If it is, all too easy..
I wouldn't send my car back in a million years. Just found the Holden response quiet funny, too bad that I'm exporting the vehicle and would like some advice on how to do something. Wouldn't say that they were exactly as helpful as I thought that they might have been. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't car manufacturers want to sell cars? If I wanted to buy a car (probably a ford), drive it out of the showroom and straight into a compactor, would they advise me not to? Or am I missing the point that they just sold me a car. Upon thinking about it, I guess what they want to try and avoid is people buying Monaro's and shipping them over here, and by passing the Vaxhaul network.
Anyhow, think that I am just going to do up a sticker to put on the display, that way, when I go around europe will have KPH still. Will have to just make sure that it looks professional. Should be relatively straight forward. Might do up a couple in case anyone wants them at a later stage.

I think you will find they actually test the speedo for accuracy, so your not likely to get away with that.
Got mine done at www.protech-uk.co.uk
They actually did everything for me, just delivered the car and then picked it up a week later.
