I think the damping on my boot gas struts is shot. They hold the boot fully open, but as soon as you start to close the lid it slams shut, it slams so hard you could chop wood with it. Before I source some replacements, can anyone tell me if, on their Ro VXR, the weight of the lid is held all the way down or just held at the top?

The thread below offers conflicting opinions. There wasn't much else under the search.

For what it's worth, MF don't stock Ro VXR boot struts. The gm part number is gm92161990 (with spoiler) but I can't seem to find anywhere ithat stocks them in the uk. The struts are Stabilus lift-o-mat, part no 1602QL 0770N (force).

This place will do replacements, but their website doesn't recognise the part number. I'll call tomorrow.

I wonder if the boot struts were designed for the boot without the spoiler ? which would be lighter, might be worth asking around if they are like that from new, I have a spoiler on mine and it slams shut.

I have seen adverts of struts for non spoiler models, but it would be interesting to know the force rating written on the struts of a non-spoiler Ro.

Search on ls1gto, although it's a trunk of course.

They found some whereby they're strong enough to actually pop the boot open when you press the release!

This is true, although they only seem to last a couple of years.

Found this on LS1 forum

There seems to be much love for the strongarm 6434 replacements. But looking at the spec of them, the force is 774N which is the same as the OEM ones at 770N. So, I will probably see what SGS can come up with.

I used SGS last year to supply new rear ones and re-gas some old bonnet ones for my Monaro - fantastic service and highly recommended from my point of view.

If it helps, I can tell you that my old Monaro VXR boot was significantly less 'ferocious' than my current VXR. So I would conclude that the 'norm' is that the boot should have some resistance and it's not a design flaw as such. I wouldn't mind knowing how much it is to get the struts serviced/replaced if anyone has any figures please.

Cheers

Glad I'm not the only one then, I thought they were just hinged?

Need some of this. My bro's XF doesn't have this and I'd love to show off lol

My boot lid closes on both arms and heads with quite some force. I've had quite bad bruising on my arm as a result, although my medication does mine I bruise fairly easily.

Watching this thread with interest...

My car has had this problem (boot lid falls shut with no damping) from the first day I picked it up with 5 miles on the clock. I think its a feature

Are you saying we could add some struts to dampen it

I seem to remember years ago that one owner took his boot lid off and discovered there were torsion bars fitted by the factory that he modified for free

I have (after 9 years and 120k miles) got used to it slamming but the guys in my local car wash have lost a few fingers

I have none either, have been 'donked' on the head a couple of times in windy weather which isn't particularly fun, especially when the claret starts running and you end up with a massive lump, turn up at home and the wife thinks I've been mugged.
Some proper gas struts sounds like a VERY good idea.......

I can only add that the gas struts are present on my 05 VXR, and they seem to serve no purpose whatsoever in supporting the boot - scares the hell out of the wife though so there is entertainment value in it!

Have just got used to shutting the boot with my fingers on the licence plate lights...

I think they are present, they are under the parcel shelf so to speak.
